View Full Version : Deer Hunting Cabin

For the last 8 months, I've been spending all the spare time I could converting a barn on my property into a hunting cabin (all my friends and family now call it the ca-barn). It has been a huge project; my first building project, actually. It has turned out great; overbudget and bigger and more comfy than I initially planned. I hope to post some pics on here.

I wanted to start a thread to see pics of everybody else's hunting cabins/sheds/houses/shacks/tents/whatever. Lets see them. Inside and out. Don't forget the critters hanging on the walls. This ought to get the old blood pumping for deer season. I'll try to get some pics up, too.

Some of the best times are had at deer camp. We eat, spin yarns, reminisce, eat, hunt a little, and eat really good at our little place in Todd County.

Yep.... we were fortunate to have a lot of old mature cedars scattered around. We ended up with about 36 logs cut 5 by 8 and 24 ft. in length. The outer cuts of the log was sawed 3/4 for boxing with various width. We cut a few populars for rafter ..2 by 6 material and a few we sawed for 2 by 4's. We also sawed one pretty good size oak for window & door construction.

On the logs we knotched / dovetailed the ends and then cut a groove full length of the edge top & bottom both sides of the log. This allowed for insulation to be stuffed between the logs then sealed over with a 1/4 thick cedar strip. We then chinked over the strip. All the logs at the dovetails were drilled and pinned to each other at each joint.

All the wood material....came from our land. The metal for the roof and perma-chinking was our biggest expense. No electricity ... no running water.... complete with a half-moon one hole restroom out back.

Great looking places. Here is ours. We aquired it last yr. when we bought the farm. The guys who had the lease before us built it out of some cedar that was logged off the farm. They deserve all the credit. It is fairly remote so there is no power or water. We have an outhouse and propane heat. The second pic is from the porch. we have been busy trying to reclaim the fields. We had to cut all the cedars per CRP rules, they had been neglected for some time.http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m21/huntr467/Hpim0026.jpg

I know but man since we mowed them in Jan. the browse has been incredible and the amount of deer and turkey utilizing them is unreal. but to maintain our CRP payments they have to be mowed( either strip annually or completeevery 2 yrs,) and no trees. We are going to be running cattle on them in a few years when our crp is up and we are trying to get them inshape for that.

We had about the same situation on a little smaller scale. We had about 30 acres that we enrolled into a hardwoods restoration program. We planted in the neighborhood of 8000 trees in 1994. First couple of years required us to keep the tree rows sprayed to keep the fescue from choking out the trees until the got established. After that and in accordance to the program .....we basically could allow the sage grass areas return.

Its hard to imagine the size of these trees after 13 years.... Oaks (red & white), maples and hickories all approaching the 10 ft mark. We planted a percentage of yellow popuar in areas with drainage issues and their all 25 -30 ft tall. This area has become prime bedding areas and trails zig-zag through out. We've had good rabbit populations and quail are on a comeback.

I think this is one of the best things we could have done to this area. Future mast crops and cover that all the wildlife benefit from. Something to think about and you would'nt have to do it to all your open areas.

And one of the good things about it, it that it is less than 15 minutes from my office. If I'm having a bad day, I will more often than not be found on the front porch in my rocking chair.

built this one to be NO or low maintenance. Has well water, and electric, we use electric heat as well.....sits on a 3 acre field we cleared when we bought the place. Actually built this from a house we tore down, except for the siding. Hardly bought any lumber except for the decking. Has hard wood floors and two bunks up and one double down. Kitchen and shower.

Well, I know it has been two months (and 5,800+ views ) since I started this thread; I FINALLY am posting some pictures. Still wish I had some better ones. Thanks for everyone else's pics.

The ca-barn is nearly completed. I have some finish work still to do. Basically I took half of my barn and turned it into a cabin/barn; hence the name ca-barn. The dimensions are 12' x 48'.

It has city water, septic, electric, water heater, full bath (tub/shower, commode, sink), full kitchen (stove/oven, microwave, sink, cabinets, refrigerator), den, bedroom, concrete slab, drywall, re-claimed tongue and groove cedar wall paneling, laminate flooring, recessed lighting, beams, ceiling fans, 4 windows, two wall/window AC units, 30,000 BTU blue-flame propane heater). Just in time for deer season.

My wife and kids will now come down to stay occasionally at the farm since we have running water and commode. We are really enjoying the ca-barn.

We finished the deck last yr. It's only a 20*22 ft. cabin, with a wood burner inside. There's not a road within a 1/2 mile so we use a pretty big generator for power. We put two 55 gal. drums hooked to a small fountain pump under the cabin for water. We grill, and deep fry every night we stay, and I wish I could explain how great life is up there.

Well guys, I am almost ashamed to show my little shack after seeing some of the great cabins in this post but I will. It is only a 12 by 14 with a porch. It has a wood stove a couple bunks, and a table and chairs. It sits on my 900+ acre farm which consist of about 275 acres of crop land(mostly creek bottom land) and pasture with the rest in steep hills and forest. Has a nice big creek in front of it, and lots of deer, turkey, bobcats, grouse, rabbit, squirrels, coyotes and variouus other stuff. We spend as much time at it as possible which is a lot. I have a platform on the hill behind with a 1100 gallon water tank and have gravity fed water. I do plan to build on and do some sprucing up. Use coal oil lamps for light. It is a mile from a road and I have absolutely no traffic or noise of any kind. If it weren't for being married I would just stay here full time after I build another room on it.

Dude that is awesome. I've always wanted a little place right in the middle of nowhere. Post up some more pics. Do you run a generator?

georgeky
07-28-2008, 12:15 AM
We only use a generator when we need to run power tools or working on a piece of farm machinery. We use it as a farm headquarters during the busy season. For the most part it is very primative and I like it that way. I have added a window and rough lumber boxing since taking this pic. I will see if I have any more pics loaded to photobucket. If not I will get a few shortly. I am in the process of building a shed on the upper side now. Plan to add a bedroom to the other side soon after. The friend with black hair almost lives here now. He stays all summer and helps me on the farm. He is divorced and can get by with it. We do a lot of cooking and just loving life here.

Here is another taken a while after. It is a bit fuzzy as I too pic of a pic.

Here is one taken a few nights ago as we were camping and cooking with the Dutch Oven. I have a few flowers growing for the hummingbirds. We also have a veggy garden in front of the shack.

Here is what was in the oven. Pork loin I raised myself along with new taters, carrorts, onions, peppers, broccoli, and a fresh head of cabbage steamed on top. All of it was raised here on the farm.

This was taken from the porch of the shack. Have a veggy garden for a front yard.

Got this varmint last week raiding the garden. There were two of them but when they seen me coming with Marlin 39A they took off. I managed one good shot at 36 steps and got this old boar.

No Kale. Potato's, broccoli, cabbage, onions. Would have to look at the garden again now to see what the smaller stuff is. I know there is tomato's, peppers, cauliflower, and beans. I had to quit trying sweet corn in this patch as the coons kept getting most of it.

Don't have a computer there yet. Hehehe! I did consider a hat, but it was to hot for hat making that day so I just buried it.

One thing about the little shack it is a low budget deal. Dad and me packed all the lumber and shingles in out of leftovers from building jobs. We built our own trusses even. The porch was put together crudely out of salvaged corral lumber, and a couple cedar post. Built the shack in 1985, when I got out of the Army, and it is holding up right well. Added the porch in 2005. Might start an addition on it tomorrow if it isn't too hot. Have all the stuff, just a matter of gettin it done.

I am kinda in a corner. The shack is in Clark county, but 75 feet behind the shack is the county line with Montgomery county, and to the south of it about 1000 feet is the Powell county line. My house is on the Montomery county side. The farm lays in all 3 counties. I was born and raised in Clark(Winchester), and cut my teeth on a Ale8 bottle.

Out on the edge of Washington County, close to the Mercer, Boyle County lines. Gods country. Have to pump daylight in parts of the year.

Josh, thanks for starting this thread! I love all the pics, especially the rustic, primitive cabins, but congratulations on the ca-barn! It looks great and I'm sure those kids are going to enjoy growing up with the outdoors.

I must say that I am disappointed though... that pic of your "view from the ca-barn" does not highlight the Flying-V!?! I know a tree monkey who put a lot of sweat equity in that thing and it could have been given at least 15 seconds of fame! ;)
