Me and a buddy and his brother went hog hunting today. Boy have they been tearing the creek bottom up! Their scat was full of the farmers beans. There were huge trails leading to the creek bottom and there were tracks and big holes where they had been rolling around in the mud. We saw two and my buddy managed to get two shots off but came up empty handed. Both were from this years litter I guess because they would have only went about 50 or so pounds. We ended up walking our behinds off only to find the best sign near our parking place. Oh well, I guess we know for next time. We are planning on going out and trying an ambush from a blind in the next few days. There have been several killed in this area including a huge 300 pound sow. I saw the pics today, man she was huge. I'll keep you guys posted if we do any good. Oh, before you ask, I was sworn to secrecy about the place and it's not public land anyway:eek:.

I wonder where those escaped from?

Don't let Tha' Hat find out about it. He and wkb are serial feral animal killers.

They whacked an entire family of feral goats a couple of years ago in one outing.

Don't worry, in a couple of months, I'm sure the cat will be out of the bag.

Is this in KY? Forgive my stupid question, but hunting hogs is not something that you hear about in central KY. I've heard of a few being seen in KY, but I didn't know places were starting to see a huntable population.

you are right art, there aren't any hawgs here in central ky, maybe a few in southeast ky, but those west ky boys seem to always have something to fling arrows at.....you can bet mepperson is going to keep this one under his hat if at all possible.....seems there is an area down there, "insert name" bottoms that has some.....but it may take some time under a light bulb and some ruthless tactics to get him to spill the beans...:D

I just came back from LBL and there were signs everywhere requesting that any hog sightings be reported immediately. I took that to mean that there must be some there.

I wouldn't get too excited about having a farm with hogs on it. Read up about how fast they multiply and what havoc they do on food plots, crops, woods, fields, you name it. Wildlife biologist have almost given up on trying to eradicate them down south. I would do everything in my power to kill everyone of them as quickly as possible.
Outdoor life wrote a good article on them a few months ago. They are not something we ever want around here.

I have some friends thats been seeing them since last winter. Where their at..... in no time there will be plenty. I figured they would be holding pretty tight to river with the conditions weve had.

Mepperson.... I believe a hogs nose & ears is as good or better than a deer. They will wind you in a heartbeat. In my opinion their eyesight is not that great...but they can pick up movement pretty good. If you have access fairly easy ... I'd put a little bait out... corn.. and brush a blind in and wait them out. Their about like a deer and mostly nocturnal ...so most of their actvity will be late afternoon and very early morning. During the day they will just lay up in a cool spot and jumping them up probably wont provide much of a shot. You would'nt think a hog would be that fast...but they are.

Hope ya'll make a dent in the population before they spread to other parts of the county.

Take a bit more time and wet the corn well, and let it ferment! (shhh)

I wouldn't say they would overpopulate too quickly. You guys remember this thread?

I'd say ham, chops and bacon is better than starling anyday.:D Poor people have poor ways.

Yeah, these two didn't even see us and we were almost in the wide open just 40 yards away. We luckily had the wind in our face and they couldn't smell our scent. I actually heard them before seeing them. Apparently the locals are saying that maybe as many as 40 to 50 have been killed in the last year or two. There is a story that some guy moved to this particular county from Louisiana and decided to bring some hogs here because he missed hog hunting back home. I don't know if it's true, but I saw a pic of one that was killed recently that didn't look like a feral hog. It had a longer snout and the ears were shorter. Some people have reportedly killed some that have had quite a bit of hair on their backs that stuck straight up. We have thought about puting out some feed and brushing in a blind for a late evening hunt. I'll keep you guys posted on how we do if we get to go back out soon.

Down in Texas they hunt them on a full moon at night......What are the regs in Kentucky? Does anybody know?

We looked it up and you cannot hunt anything except coon, oppossum, bullfrogs, and maybe one more critter at night. We thought about that but it is against the regs.
