Depends on the type of snake......

If it was from a cooperhead, water mocassin or rattler you would see alot of swelling. This is due to the type of venom these snakes produce called Hemotoxins. Or blood toxins. They work by getting into the blood and destroying tissue. Thus causing alot of swelling....Its actually part of their digestive system.....

Coral snakes produce neurotoxins. This type of venom would attact your nervous system, leading to respiratory arrest in severe cases.....

I suppose you could consider other venomous creatures such as spiders or even severe bee stings that could lead to your sisters dog being sick as well.....Keep us posted.....

I've had dogs bitten that would swell at the bite area, and I had a couple that would swell in the neck area; not sure if that's where the bite was, but that's where the swelling occurred.

Copperheads will swell them up good but they get over it. I've never had one get really sick, but they say rattlesnakes can put them down for a long time, if they don't die outright.

Vets will tell you that if the dog is going to die, it will do so in the first 15 minutes. If it makes it that long, it'll probably be fine. Dogs handle it much better than we do.

Benadryl will help the swelling.

We have had the occasional copperhead bite occur on our dogs. My dad would always mix up a big bucket of soupy mud, and pack the dog in it. As the mud dried, it would draw the poison & swelling out. I know, it sounds crazy, but it worked.
