Does anyone hunt the February LBL coyote season? If you don't, think about it. I've never heard so many as this year. Almost afraid to walk out of the woods after an evening bow hunt. They start singing at sunset and for about five minutes after. Then nothing - but I know they're out there[:0]. Called in five during this spring's LBL turkey season. Not on purpose[;)].

Whom ever is interested in this should go to Predator Masters forum and look under "calling in the east" There are some guys getting a hunt together.

Those coyotes humbled a large group of hunters last February. I know, I was one of them....

LBL coyotes are tough from what I hear. I talked to a guy that lives there last month and coyote hunts there and in the state close to LBL. He said last year he killed 35 yotes but was only able to kill 2 at LBL.

Blevins is right. The Predator Masters had 20 people there last year for a 2 day hunt and all struck out. The problem at LBL is there are some "locals" that have educated the coyotes. They just drive around in their trucks and call from inside the warm cab, now if they were to shoot from the truck then that's illegal. But that's one of the problems at LBL. I've given them a pice of my mind once or twice whenI see someone calling from their trucks plus anytime I've seen a rifle laying on the seat I trun them in to the office.

One other thing. Last year while coyote hunting at LBL in the snow at a few places I bow hunt I saw more coyote tracks than deer tracks. They are making a dent on the turkey population and it will not be long before the deer start to feel it too.

I think they have already hunt the deer heard. Last year while bow hunting in area 5 I watched 3 yotes chase a doe and yearling under my stand. It looked like they had been chasing them for a while and would say it looked like a chase to the death. Also last year my son watched a pack of yotes kill a yearling at another WMA. We all need to do our part and kill every yote we can!

I was one of those that set up last years hunt. What we found was that the coyote's are already working the deer herd hard. Scats of pure meat with little deer hair were common in every area worked. And there are some really large dogs up there. At least one I would estimate to be at least fifty pounds, the largest set of tracks I've seen in some years. Estimates of the coyote population are about 1 for each square mile or slightly less. More than 300 coyote's. These numbers are from research done by the staff at LBL.
This years hunt will be the 6,7, and 8th of febuary. We will again headquarters at Wranglers campground . Jimmie

Anyone that could put a bug in the ear of the boys from Cadiz (Knight-Hale Team) it would make a great show. The dogs are there - and big time.

Every time I've been up there to their place in Cadiz they are either gone or cranking the truck as I get there.I'm not fond of theeir howler but that call with the interchangable reeds is a killer. Their video was done mainly in the LBL. There is a diference in calling the LBL and those guys could help imensly. They take more coyote's there than anyone I know of. Most that hunt the LBL only take a few each year. But you also have to consider Harold and David have been hunting there at least 35 years. Jimmie

Local rumor is that they are moving. Hope not. They are a tradition in western KY. Trigg County and LBL wouldn't be the same without them.

When I went by their factory last month there was a sign on the door that said, closed, will not re-open.

They are always open when you are hunting any other legal game but the specific coyote rifle season is February. LBL has a good web site with all the hunting guides posted so double check me on this before making the trip. I think that means you couldn't use the .243 now but can in February.

Joe,
You've got it right. You can shoot a coyote while on any legal hunt like your bow hunting for deer and see a coyote you can shoot it with your bow. In the month of Feb only you can use centerfire rifles and electronic game callers.
I'm telling you it's not easy. Too many people drive around with a rabbit tape playing in their trucks cassette player with their windows down thinking they can call one up. All they've done is educated the coyotes.
About Knight & Hale, they sold out a couple years ago to a company in California where the calls are now made. They still live in the Cadiz area.

You fellows need to grab your shotguns or 22 mags and get up there. I counted 22 between rhodes bay and the south fork of sugar creek. For those that know the area that is zone five. They would be short one young of the year but murphy played a dirty prank on me, Bolt was raised just enough to lock my trigger[:(] I'll be glad when they decide to let us use centerfires during the early season as well. That's right smack in the middle of where we had two bow stands this season. As I said in an earlier post there were evenings I was uneasy walking out in the dark. Right at sunset they would all start singing and there were a BUNCH! If they allowed the centerfires all year for the coyotes the deer and turkey poaching would be out of control. It appears to be bad enough now.

JOEKAT and Blevins gap, area five is short one dog. It would have ben three if I could have carried my 250.I've got some more work to do on getting those dogs to come out and play in a more favorable manner but I'm getting there. Those darned thermals killed me last week. Called in six at once and the rascals caught scent before they even crosssed the field. Yah'll can fuss about the poaching but I definately need some firepower to do some real good. Jimmie
