So my wife's sitting on the deck yesterday, and a tick just falls out of the sky and lands on her leg. The edge of the closest tree was 15-20 feet away and the wind wasn't blowing much at all. I don't get it. I knew they could drop straight down, but there was NOTHING above her. Can they somehow drift a little? Spiders can, but they have their silk that they can use like a parachute. I don't know how a tick could drift, and even if they could, I don't see how one could be that accurate.

If you think you saw a tick flying, then you need to head directly to the "Should marijuana be legal thread".

I would ask CSS archer to take a ultra close up photo of one with that super macro lense of his next time he finds one.
I don't think they have wings but they sure do have a habit of appearing out of nowhere?!?!?!?!?! Maybe they can bend time and space? They make a little tick portal, worm hole type thing that goes directly from there tree right to your leg.......................Never mind, maybe I should go to the Marajuana thread as well.

I'm quite sure they don't have wings, was just joking about that obviously, but I don't see how that one just dropped on her leg when nothing was above. I didn't think they could float or drift, I thought all they could do was drop straight down. She didn't just happen to notice it and assumed that's what happened, she saw it land.

Maybe it fell off of the deer that was stuck to the undercarriage of the DC-10 flying directly overhead. :D

So you think the tick fell from outer space? Yes, why didnt I think of that!!!!:)....................Sorry, I will go back to the Marajuana thread now.:o
Seriously. I don't doubt your story. I wonder if they randomly just jump off a branch into the breeze every once in a while and hope for the best? In this case the payoff was landing on your wifes leg and subsequently being squished into a pulp under her heal. Probably not what the little guy originally intended. Who knows, I am not a tick expert (obviously).
It is not uncommon for a tick to latch on to a bird. My bet would be that a bird flew over when the tick detached. Many insects that can't fly hitch rides on birds.

I actually live fairly close to the airport where that guy tried to latch on to the undercarriage of that plane taking off. He didn't make it. He made it for awhile but then couldn't hang on. Maybe the tick did the same thing.

It is possible they drifted in the wind from nearby trees. The worst case of being eat up by deer ticks I've ever had occurred one summer in the early 90s. I was roofing my way through college and spent a day on a roof down in New Concord in Calloway County. Eat up ain't the word! The house was graveled all the way around and we never got off in the weeds or woods. They had to have fell out of the trees.

I must have slept through 1999. :D
I didn't know that they had ever identified that guy.
