View Full Version : I'm done with cotton camo!

 I have had it with cotton camo. One season and it's faded out to the point of worthlessness. I have tried to set the dye with vinegar. I have tried to limit washing and I have tried every laundry detergent recommended for camo. Anyone else have this issue? Lately I have sought out clothing that has a nylon, polpropolene, or berber fabric but the selection is somewhat limited. Especially for warm weather. I have decided this year to go with a few netted leafy suits and wear a light base layer such as xscent or xstatic under it until the weather cools off. The thing that sucks is I have several outfits of cotton camo that are in great condition except for the fact that they are faded. What do you guys do to keep the color in your cotton camo? With the cost of this stuff these days, you'd think that there would be something manufactures could do to get the color to set in the manufacturing process. But then again, if we didn't have to buy a new set each year, how could they get rich?

I know that if you let cotton camo air dry vs drying them in the dryer they seem to stay brighter longer and does not shrink as bad either.

Turn inside out to wash and air dry. Works for me.
Could your wife be putting bleach in the mix?

Depends on the pattern. I find most camo too dark so the fading helps.
I've got some faded MOBU and it looks better now than it did new.

This also works for me using camo-wash. I will say that I have quit buying any camo from Bass-Pro. It seems to fade as soon as you unwrap it.
Under Armour Heat Gear/ Cold Gear. I bought the stuff a couple years ago. I ended up buying a new shirt at dicks for 17.00. Polpropolene is the future of fabric.

Why would a brand name camo clothing bought at Bass Pro fade quicker than the same brand bought from some other store???
When did Bass Pro start manufacturing camo clothing??

I gotta agree with white rubi. I've noticed that after a couple of years, my cotton camo is faded and doesn't look all that spiffy. It does, however, blend into the woods very well with its softened lines and fades. I guess it really doesn't matter what I look like to me, but what I look like to Bambi.

Well, do you honestly think the animals are going to see your cloths are faded?! I mean, we wear orange vests and hats during rifle...I sometimes where tan pants and green shirt bow hunting. The only reason I switched to underarmour was because the fabric keeps me dry better and is warmer or cooler depending on which underarmour you wear.

I honestly believe they'll see you if your clothes aren't faded. Although they do not see colors, I'm sure they see intensity and contrast. I believe that stuff that gently fades from one thing to the next is awfully hard to see in most instances.
I once hunted with a guy who religiously wore an old army tanker coat. It was about a gazillion years old and he washed it in the old Kenmore frequently. It was as thin as an excuse, soft as mouse flatulent and faded as the Monkees. He could sit in his tree stand and you'd have to look like hell to find him. No camo, just colored cloth trying desperately to return to its original color. That old boy killed a lot of deer in that jacket and mourned its demise. I don't have empical proof that it works that way, but it did for him and it seems to for me, much like my favorite camo, this post is going to fade away.

Dang, don't just dump your muddy/bloody huntin' clothes in front of the wifes washin' machine. She'll throw it in with bleach and high in
phosphate/fluorescent brightener packed wash powders.
Dang Camo will glow in the dark.

What predator said. Plus unless it gets some odor to it, it goes back into a plastic container with scent wafers.

Not only Bass Pro but just about every Hunting/Fishing store sells cotton clothing. I search far and wide to purchase camo that is not cotton. Next time in Bass Pro check the labels, just about everything you pick up will be cotton. I don't purchase cotton because it is cold, stays wet, and just a terrible choice for the majority of outdoor activities. I have had better luck finding quality non-cotton camo in the cities in the west. For some reason the stores in Kentucky just will not stock many articles of non-cotton.

In the past, I have "tie dyed" my faded camo with Rit fabric dye. It is available in a variety of earth tone colors. Plus, it gives me something to do during the off season. For the last few years though, I wear a leafy wear outfit as my outer layer. It has never seen a washer and dryer, and it never will. If it gets real dirty and bloody, I soak it in a bucket of water and baking soda, spray it down with a garden hose, and let it air dry outside. It then goes back into the storage container until next use. I have kinda moved away from camo anyway. It has kinda become cliched. The old timers killed plenty of deer without camo, and I am finding out that I can too. I think the camo industry is a lot like the bass lure industry, it catches more hunters than it does deer. (Now this doesn't hold water for turkey hunting. :D)

I prefer my hunting clothes to be faded. Next time you're in the fall woods, look at the colors around you and you'll that that most things are shades of gray and brown. There's really not very much bright green or stark black.
Another way to look at it is to look at the color of a deer or squirrel or other animal you're hunting. They're out there for survival and their colors aren't bright. Now, if you go out there hunting peacocks or parrots, then maybe you'd want bright colors.

Maybe bring back blue jeans and the old red and black flannel checkered shirts.

Join the Ky. Army Nat. Guard! All the free camo you need, plus, when faded or torn, turn it in for new! All for free!:D
Ok, I was joking, but I have seen many use their uniforms for hunting clothing.

In addition to washing inside out with sport wash and air drying, try adding a 1/2 teaspoon of brown rit dye every now and then. It tends to knock down that "white-out" look.

Turn inside out and wash with baking soda (instead of commercial detergents) and use cold water only...

Well I have one good thing to say about BPS is that they carry big man clothing. I can wear what most retailers offer, but I like to buy my hunting clothing bigger than usual for layering and for shrinkage.

Believe it or not last time i was issued BDU's I had to sign a statement that I understood the uniforms were for official business only. No hunting, farm work, etc etc.
Of course with the ACU's now that should be a problem of the past

Dang! That was rough! My old supply NCO would just throw them at ya, no turn in or anything! My new supply NCO made me sign a statement of charges for a pair of summer flight gloves, and ach pads last weekend! BTW, both items were stolen WHILE they were sitting in his supply room! Go figure!
