Went to do some pond hopping/scouting this morning and saw somthing strange.Went to a small pond and noticed at one end a number of large bluegill fiercly protecting some beds. These beds were all well fanned and had no sediment in them.In fact, they all looked fresh, not like they had been made back in the spring.I fished past them and the fish for the most part moved a few feet out from them but never left. When I returned some time later, there they all were again hovering right over them pulling patrol. This is nearly the middle of August, what gives?:confused:I've seen plenty of bluegill congregate in the shallows, and I've seen plenty on beds, these were definately guarding these beds, but I don't understand.......

The majority are done but I'm sure there are late bloomers.

I haven't checked the moon phase lately but it's not uncommon for bluegills to spawn all summer on a full moon. I'm sure it involves way less numbers than in the spring. I understand that redears are known to spawn in early fall also.

Bluegills will spawn a couple times per summer in some lakes. They were guarding beds all over Lake Ouachita in Arkansas last week.

Thats what I've allways been told.

Went last weekend and there are quite a few on nest.

We've seen them on nest since late May.

Bluegills always spawn at least 3 times per year. Redear sunfish (shellcrackers) spawn only once per year.
