Mike, for college any newer laptop (even used in good condition) will work just fine. One thing to make sure it has Windows XP and MS Office (most classes require those).
Stick with modern name brands, it would be hard to go wrong, IF you find some you're interested in PM me(if you'd like, or here is fine with me) and I'll be happy to answer what I can about them.
*I* would want at least a 40 gig hard drive (80 is better) and at least 512 meg RAM (Random Access Memory, ) ( one gig RAM would be SWEET) memory (RAM) is important because EVERYTHING that you "run" is actually in memory on the computer, so more = faster running.
I'll be happy to help in any way that I can.

I bought my wife one from Best Buy, not 8 months ago. It is a HP Pv6000 and it's sweet. I don't like using the finger gizmo to move the pointer around, so I bought her a smaller size mouse to use with it. You'll need the Office Program, which you can get the Student Teacher version for around $ 159.00. But the program costs close to $ 400.00 other wise for non-students or teachers. The program is exactly the same.:)

For the money, this is the best thing around. Not the fastest processor, not the most RAM, not the biggest hard drive, but the best bang for the buck.

I bought mine at Best buy for $600. It is a gateway, and I mainly use it for school, internet, and some online games. It has a 80 GB hard drive, cd/dvd rom burner, and 1 GB of ram. I have never had a problem other than the "G" key popped off one time, and I had to send it off to have it fixed. But it has been, by FAR, the best computer I have ever owned.

I have had good luck with Dell refurbished notebooks, from www.computer-show.com (http://www.computer-show.com) or Ebay. I bought one for my Daughter in college from CS for around $300. It worked fine for her for 3 years. She needed to upgrade so I went all out and bought her a new Macbook Pro. Told her that's the last one I will ever buy her.
I am using a Dell Latitude C610 with 30gb HD, 512mb RAM and 1.2GHZ processor and CD writer/DVD for about $350 off Ebay. Never had the first problem with it in over a year.

If your wife is going to be a student at U of L or U of K they have microsoft agrrements for windos Xp and office. Don't buy office except through the school IT department. U of L students /staff can get Office for $8 - $16 dollars depending on the version and use. UK Community colleges may offer something similar.

Speaking of Best Buy, my wife bought a laptop there yesterday. Been looking for a while. Gateway, $499 w/ Pentium dual core, 160 harddrive. I thought that was a pretty good deal. She'll be using it for work. It was on the front page of the add they put in the Sunday paper.
