Help me out here gang. For hunting deer at 125 yards or less would I be better served with a 45 caliber or a 50? What is the practical difference between the two? I'm thinking a CVA Optima is the gun I want. Thanks for any help

Either will do fine for that range with conical bullets or sabots! The .45 is the flattest shooting of the muzzle-loaders and that's it's strong point(be it moot at 125 yards)[:D]
They both have energy to spare with the right loads at 175 yards+ if you plan to take an occasional shot at that range or more the .45 would probably be a better choice, we own both; I shoot a .45 my oldest son shoots a .50 (both mags)[:)]

if you,re a chronic walmart shopper go with the .50, lots of places, not just walmart have limited selections on the .45
just my opinion

Break all the rules and go with either a .54 or a .58.[:D] Stuff is pretty hard to find for the .58 though. I've got a Knight MK-85 in .54 cal and I wouldn't take anything for it. It's a deer killing machine!![:p] I've shot it out to 200 yds, but there's a little too much drop for my liking. I like those shots where the smoke from the black powder helps to "season" the meat![:p][;)]
