Southwick Associates, the pros that conduct online polls asked 2,400 people why they hunt. The results:

To get away to nature: 42.8%

Spend time w/friends and family 20.3%

The challenge 15.5%

Relax: 15.4%

Other 4.3%

A bunch of old guys must have taken that poll because you generally don't get to the "nature" or "relaxation" point until you're in your 40s or 50s.
If I were in my teens or 20s or even early 30s again I'd have hollered, "To Kill Deer," which would put me in the Other 4%. The end game is what mattered in my brown-it's-down days.
And that is OK. In my opinion, if a kid does not shoot, gut and drag out his or her share of deer, he or she can never mature to the next phase--"to spend time with family/friends"--and finally to "nature/relaxation." He or she must get the deer-killing out of his or her system so he or she can fully understand the greatness of hunting and the true meaning of it.
How old are you and where do you fit in? Why do you hunt?

so why do you hunt????

I put in "all the above".

I like "all the above" HOWEVER I like the meat. SO my primary reason to hunt is for groceries ! ;)

Fixing to be 44 yrs. old and I still hunt for the very same reason...All of the above. There is nothing better than to 1. Have a place to hunt. 2. Understand the hunt. 3. Eat what you hunt. 4. Have friends and stories who were at the hunt. 5. Be able to continually relive the hunt.....

I love it! My soul aches just to be out there! I tinker with my guns, bows, treestands, hunting gear, when I go fishin I'm lookin for deer or turkey, and when I drive down the road I try and spot them. It drives my wife crazy! I offer the kids a dollar to the first one to spot a deer before me. Have not lost yet. I watch hunting videos and shows and this is not new to me been doing it for years. Like a junky looking for the next fix. mouth watering just typing about it.

Well said clint ! I feel you man. I can almost relate hunting to church. I don't go to church as often as I used to because I don't live at home anymore and, and well, (more bad excuses). But when I do go to church I walk away feeling good inside, a kinda clean, refreshed, peaceful feeling. The funny thing is that I almost feel that same way when I get in back in the truck after a long day of being submerged in nature. Being up in a tree on a cool autumn evening just cleanses me, and makes me a happy person. Thats really the only way I can describe it. AND that is why I love hunting.

I second that- good observation 64. From a 50 yr old. But I picked getting out with nature. One of my best days of last season was sitting in a stand at WBBP's and watching 3 different Turkey flocks start the morning. One of them , about 30 birds, wandered over right under me and spent the morning. That was a good day afield.:)
