I know that there's not much known about the disease, and a lot of effort being done to find out more. I was just wondering if anyone has ever tried to link the spread of the disease to something other than a bait pile or a high fence operation?

I'm thinking maybe it's being spread by "other animals" that have contacted the protein from a animal (alive or dead) that had the disease - such as a 'coon, coyote or even a turkey. Just because these animals don't die from the disease doesn't mean they couldn't carry it.

good point. i believe you've hit on something that need to be thoroughly examined as well. also, i wonder if ticks and mosquitoes could carry it

The info running on CNN is going to really blow this thing out so big that parents won't let their kids hunt.

I've been looking all day at sites since you posted this, most were micro-biology sites(my head hurts now).

It seems that Prions, the cause of the CWD, are able to survive out of the carrier!!!! No one states any evidence that possibly a coyote eating the brain matter of a CWD deer, could not be a carrier through the process of defecation elsewhere. But, everyone says an elk with CWD walking through a field contaminates that field!!! ??????
Good question Multi.

In talking with a friend, who is a biologist, the real facts seem to be no statements being made because they don't have real facts to back up much with CWD. They can't make statements on record that can't be proven and this CWD is still very unknown to most and how it spreads is still new to everyone. This is one reason I believe so few are making news about this.

I learned this weekend that the test to confirm if an animal has the disese, which can only be done on dead animals, cost an average of $250 each. Somebody is going to have to foot an enormous bill before this is over with.

I am convinced that CWD is naturally ocurring. In other words, every state that starts looking for it will eventually find it. It will probably manifest itself in areas with high herd densities. This is only a theory.

About 13-14 years ago I hunted deer down in Hopkins County. It was the last year you could take 2 bucks with a rifle. They had just gone through some type of illness in the area, was it "black tongue" or something like that? I saw a lot of dead deer, their tongues swollen and the deer were in poor health. Does anyone from that area remember it? If so what was it called?

That would have been blue tongue. I saw some of it at Ft. Knox a few years ago. The deer that survived the disease had cracked hoofs, indicating that they had the disease during the summer months and didn't die from it. It was found state wide that year, I was told.

Thanks Multi,
Bull Moose got me thinking about his theory.
