A buddy had his truck looked at after a lot of popping coming from the engine comp.. They had said that the transfer case was going out. His problem is paying for it so he wants to know, if he can disconnect the front axles and it solve the problem until funds are generated.
BTW, 98 AWD 5.0 I think

i believe he can remove the front drive shaft and that should do it,sounds like the chain in the transfer case

Could be u-joints on the front axles or the drive shafts. could be a lot of things other than that too. Sounds like he need a second opinion first off.

I agree !
Disconnecting the front driveshaft will not stop the internal parts from turning. They just won't be turning the front drivetrain.
A popping noise sounds like axle joints to me.
trust me

I'm betting on dry u-joints. That's the highest wear item under there. Try the cheap fix first and go from there.

Nope, just look at them or get the truck off the ground and roll the axle. No sense replacing them unless they are bad. You'll be able to tell if they are. Also, if it has full time hubs, they have a plastic piece in there is known to last about 100,000 miles and then it's done. You can replace those hubs with locking hubs and save a bundle over buying replacement hubs. When it's bad, it'll make a popping noise.

It's not a Ford truck if that is the correct description. Ford has no AWD truck and the 5.0 was discontinued after M/Y '06.
It could be any number of things. Transfer case, cv joints, hubs. No way to tell without physically looking at it.

In 98?
I figured they started dropping the 4.6 in them the same time they swapped the trucks. The last 4.6 that I had was a lot peppier than any stock 302 I ever owned.
