Despite being dry for the past couple weeks.... our little mellon patch is turning on. I've got three different varieties of watermellons & two varieties of cantaloupe. I've never had much luck with watermellons but I fertilized & limed this spot heavy in the spring. So far everything is looking good.

I gave this patch to my youngun to take care of . She has been pretty proud of her first mellon patch. Heres a few pics we took this afternoon ....

I'll take one of those off of your hands when they start coming in so quickly you can't eat them all. :D

j/k

Nice looking patch you have going there. We never had much luck with melons or canteloupes either back when I dabbled with it. I don't think our soil was sandy enough for them.

I've tried to grow them 3 times. Each time, I got tons of vines and leaves and only buds for the melons that soon fell off. Not sure what the secret is. Good looking garden!

My luck with melons is like Hammer's....Never could get them to grow. But when I tried they never would get much bigger than a Grapefruit or Cantaloupe.

As a kid I never had luck with watermellons. When I got married ...I bought a place on the south end of the county.... raised a garden ....again never any luck. Sold that place and built the house I'm in now and this is the first year even trying watermellons ... so far its turned out good. I think soil conditions are the key. Where I'm at now is not 5 miles from where I was raised as a kid but the soil has a lot more clay and the patch is sloped. The soil is aparently better for watermellons or at least what my thoughts are as of now.
