Someone in the Classifieds was looking for a large male dog for a pet. If anyone is looking for a pet, I'd urge them to go to the nearest pound and recue one (last time I went, the pound in Pulaski Co. was full of large dogs, including some beautiful hounds).

It's a good thing to do to get a dog out of one of those places. The little dog Leggy and I rescued last winter is a member of the family now, don't know what we'd do without him.

Leggy and I can't go back to another pound though, it breaks our hearts and we want to take all of them home. If you need a pet, please go to the pound and help those poor dogs and cats out.

Good post. I'm the same way. I have a hard time going to the pound because it really pisses me off to see the reality of man's stupidity and how otherwise loving pets have been screwed over by man for no fault of their own.

We adopted a cat last year and since then my girlfriend has been doing volunteer work for the animal shelter. I donate some $$ to them as well because nothing pisses me off quite like a sorry pet owner.

I know this is kind of off the subject, but I recently got a dog from a fellow KHFer, COUNTRYBOY, a german shepherd. The mother of this dog is one lucky dog thanks to him. If I remembering this right, COUNTRYBOY was out one day, seen some buzzards flying above and decided to check what they was circling. He came across a german shepherd someone had shot in the mouth, thinking it was dead untill he noticed her tail moving. Well he took the dog home, to the vet to I guess, nursed the female german shepherd back to health which he bred with the male german shepherd to have a litter of pups, one of which I am lucky to own.(Named him Gunnar, which is nordic for "brave warrior") It takes a pretty great guy to do this and I just thought it should be shared.

Yep, if you go and think you want one, don't wait too long to decide if you do or not. Because most dogs and cats only live at the Pound for a period of time and they are destroyed. So don't waste anytime if you like one in particular....Adopt him or her......:)

The bad part about going to the pound is what they charge. They just upped their rates where I live. It cost 200 dollars or more to adopt a pound dog. This is why many die. If they truly wanted to find a home for them they should lower the cost. Not many people will pay that when the can go get a pure breed puppy for the same price. It's sad because most of them will die there. I have a beagle I'm going to have to take to the pound because it was dropped on me and I cant find it a home. I already have all the dogs I can handle now. Smart and friendly too. I hate when people go and drop their problems on someone else.

If you look for a specific breed, check some of the breed rescues. We got our male Boxer at the Central Kentucky Boxer Rescue. He's been a GREAT dog. He bounced around for a month or two in "foster homes". Within a few months, he had been in 5-6 different houses. He's found a spot with us for good. The poor lady that runs the place just had too many dogs and didn't charge us a thing for a pure bred Boxer that was about a year old.

Great idea. I got my dog from the pound, however, be careful who you deal with. In Louisville, the biggest pound is the Humane Society. I won't get another animal from them, because they are affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States. So, a portion of what you give them goes to the corporate offices.

My wife and I adopted a Cocker Spaniel from th Ft Knox pound this past January and have never regretted it. This is our second Cocker Spaniel. The neat thing was that they even allowed us to take him home for a couple of weeks for a trial run. Now we have a 2 year old and a 13 year old Cocker. I think the younger dog makes the older dog feel young again.
