What do y'all think about allowing commercial fishermen to stock arm length paddlefish into lakes and then harvesting them later using 6" gill nets? There is already known "incidential losses" of large trophey game fish that will occur.
This is a topic that the legislators have charged the Dept of fish & wildlife to research. Wondering how everyone feels about this?

It'll never take place.

I hope it doesn't happen. I believe the "incidential loss" would be too high.

i have to agree. the loss would be enormous due to the paddle/game fish ratio

I've got to agree with everyone so far. Doesn't sound like a good idea to me. If the commercial fishermen want to grow them....have them build their own places.

I too agree with y'all, but you had better keep your ear to the ground on this. The Legislators have charged the Dept to hold hearings on public opinion of a Aqua-culture program designed by Kentucky State University. Meetings will be held in the next couple of months. I'll try rounding up the dates.

The handout says, <BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Paddlefish reservoir ranching is being proposed for several pulic reservoirs in KY such as Beshear, Taylorsville, Barren River, Nolin River, Dewey, Herrington and Rough River lakes. A total of 20,000 acres of water over 10 years is being proposed for stocking. <hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

Public meetings are planned for Bowling Green, Louisville and Morehead in Sept.

A mail survey of the general public and licensed anglers will be conducted in Sept.

A report is to be given to a legislative committee in Nov. 2002.

I'm against it. Gill nets in the Nolin River will catch lots of Walleye and white bass--both of which have great runs in the early spring.

Catfish farmers make their own places,

So do Shrimp, talapia, etc. In fact the move to most types of farming in this nature is more along the lines of contained not extraction. And where is the big demand for paddle fish?

Except maybe trout programs (which I always assumed was state run) and is not actually in the lake where is the precedence for commerical fisherman turning public waters in to commerical fisheries. And why would we want to start it now?

Further Gill nets what a waste. If this passes put me down on the rebels willing to sabotage lists. Where do commercial entripises on public lands end.

I've mentioned this briefly as a project for the Cyberhunters when we were first forming. I think it SUCKS!!!...how many big stripers, catfish etc. will this kill.

Move this to the cyberhunter thread please Darton and starting immediately I would like for a motion and a second to be made in the cyberhunter voteing booth that we draft a letter to Uofk and our legislators and fight this with all we have.

I've been discussing this privately with several folks since I found out about it and the striper fishermen are especially pissed off!

This is what Cyberhunters are designed for so lets get at it!!

The demamd for paddlefish is their eggs -- caviar! Fish farms are beginning to stock paddlefish for this purpose which is a good idea. Doing it in a public lake is not a good idea.

the people at the KSU ag. farm which is right up the road from me must be pretty confident that this stocking will happen. they are already raising fingerling paddlefish, matter of fact a guy took a bunch to the local pet store for him to sell. i hope they get the rug pulled from under them on this.
