I bought a gun for someone in Maryland as a gift, how can I transfer the gun into his name?

Individual to individual--there is no requirement to transfer on paper. All you need to do is keep some record of who you brought it from and how you desposed of it. There is no registration.

If you bought it from a dealer, then it's in your name. You can still give it away, but keep record of it to protect yourself if they come looking.

Yes. Federal regulations pretain to dealers, not individuals. It's what is known as the gun show loophole. A lot of those people at gun shows are not licensed dealers, so they sell with out doing the paper forms and NICS check. Only guns sold at FFLed dealers are required to do a FFL 4473.

i have bought and sold many a long and short gun at flea markets, trade days, gun shows over the last 50 years . i have listed a few of them that i had gotten from a gun shop and they were in my name.a couple months ago i got a call from a state trooper who said a gun that i had in my name was used in a murder and did i know who i sold it to.i checked and sure nuff it happened that the gun was listed in my book. i had no memory of the gun or who i sold it to. it showed that i had gotten it from a gun shop and a month later traded it back to the gun shop.i asked him why the gun was still in my name. he said he had no idea. the shop was out of business but still had the paper work. it sems that they failed to sign it back into the shop after i traded it back to them and they they failed to do paper work when they sold it. a gun shop owner is allowed like all citizens to sell his personal guns and i was told this was his peronal gun.

no law requires it but do your self a favor and get the name and address of who u sell a gun to or buy a gun from and when and a brief description of gun and circumstances of the sale.could keep u from having to hire a lawyer to prove u did nothing with the gun if the cops are looking for its user.

ps any gun u use for concealed carry or home defense should have paperwork on it at a gun shop. it saves a lot of hassle when your court date comes up if u have to use it.

The gun should have been listed in his bound book as acquired from you, with your FFL # if your a dealer. If your not, it's still listed in his bound book and the disposition is listed as personal gun.

Do you have to ship the gun?????

If so, and you are talking about a handgun, you should know that if you have to ship it to the person, you must 'SHIP' it next day air.
(UPS or FED EX.)

Individuals can't ship handguns through the mail unless you use and FFL dealer. Dealers can use Priority mail if they are shipping to another dealer.

Just an FYI..........:)

ship the gun to an ffl holder in Maryland, then when the person you purchased the gun for picks the gun up, he will at that point have to perform the nics check to take receipt of that firearm.

as far as transferring it into "their" name, there is no requirement as stated above. i would draw up a receipt of some sort and have it notarized if i were really concerned and needed to prove that i no longer was in possession of the firearm and did in fact give the gun as a gift..
