Last year I put a couple out on the ground & a couple in some boxes I made. Didn't notice much difference either way.

The best attractor is white salt. But I use the trace mineral salt. I buy the 50# bags. I chop up a circle about 6' in diameter and pour the loose salt over the tilled ground. The deer seem to like it like that. Also, put it in an area that will not accumulate leaves. The deer seem to stop using the lick if it is full of leaves. Old log landings or dead spots around field edges are good.

One thing that I have tried that the deer like a lot is to take a small salt block and put it in the cut-off leg of some old pantyhose. I then hang it from a branch close to a trail. Every time it rains, it drips onto the ground and the block can last months at a time. The deer have dug holes underneath the blocks that I have hanging.
