I am stuck between 2 different ones, and 3 different barrel lengths.

The first is a S&W model 629 with an 8 3/8" barrel

The second is a Ruger Super redhawk with 7.5",or 9.5" barrel.

I am planning on using it 90% of the time for hunting hogs and deer,10% target shooting.I do not plan on using hot loads, and I am going to keep it open sights.I don't plan on shooting over 50yds,and prefer to shoot 35yds or less.

My problem is that I have been told the S&W trigger is way smoother than the rugers, but I have been told the Ruger is way stronger than the S&W.Any help is appreciated!!

Never shot the Ruger but I put some rounds though a 629 years ago and it was a joy to shoot. Great trigger, great feel in the hand, very accurate. One of the most positive experiences I've ever had with a wheel gun.

Both of the pistols you are looking at have been around for many years and I'm betting either one of them would serve you well.

I have a 629 S&W 8 3/8 Stainless with a Leupold 2x EER scope. I have shot this gun several times before buying the scope and it does very well. IMHO the gun has better grips than the Ruger, a MUCH better trigger, and overall has a better balance in my fat little hands. :D
I use the gun primarly for Deer hunting tight woods in Indiana. I can shoot cans all day long at 100yds with this gun. It is a joy to shoot. I am considering buying a 6" model to carry out West.
My bother in law has a Ruger Red Hawk. I shot it one round and handed it back to him. I just didn't like it.
I know that my 629 was about $100 more than the Ruger but that didn't matter to me. I love mine and would never consider selling it. ;)

I've had both and I am a fan of both manufacturers. If you are going to stick with factory loads, hands down go with the 629! But if you are going to shoot it a lot and run some stiff loads through it but the redhawk. Just spend a few bucks with a gunsmith and have the trigger worked on. They are both very good pistols! If you have big hands the 629 would probably fit well out of the box. Ruger's grips are smaller but you can always change them.

I personally felt more comfortable with the 629 and shot it better, but hunted more with the redhawk and downed more more critters with it. That being said, I have probably not helped you one bit on your decision....

I ended up going with the super redhawk, put bigger grips on it and had the trigger worked on. went with it because I planned to reload and everyone said it had a much stronger frame. all I ever shoot out of it are factory loads though. I got the 7.5 inch barrel but wish I had gone with the longer one.
