5 children among victims in bizarre attack on family, neighbors, mourners

MANILA, Philippines - A man armed with a long knife killed 10 people, including five children, and wounded 14 more, during a rampage early Saturday in a central Philippine province, police said.

The man first attacked and wounded six members of his own family with whom he lived in a remote village outside Calbayog city in central Samar province around 2 a.m. local time, police desk officer Jessie Gianan said by telephone.

The man then barged into two neighboring homes where he stabbed and hacked at the sleeping occupants, then he returned to a wake where he had been drinking earlier and attacked everyone in his path, Gianan said.

Eight of his victims died on the spot and two died later at a hospital, Gianan said. Another 14 were wounded.

The man then surrendered to another villager who turned him over to the authorities. It was not immediately clear what prompted the rampage.

The problem here is not one of weapons, but of mindset. First, he was in a whacked out mindset to kill people. Secondly, and just as disturbing, it seems the whole dang town just cowered in fear; nobody had the mindset to step up and take this guy out.

My grandmother, in her prime, could have eliminated a crazy knife wielding maniac with a stout broom handle, her own favorite kitchen knife, or her trusty revolver. Now there was a woman with proper mindset.

People are conditioned to be victims. This is the result.

I agree 100% Trust Me....Someone could have taken this crazed individual out with a club, gun or whatever... A shame that people just cower and let themselves be killed by someone yielding a knife, when they could pick up anything close to them and defend off the attacker. But no they just let the guy hack away at them while screaming. But the family he killed while sleeping, I can see where they didn't have a chance to begin with, how could you defend yourself, if your asleep?

Plus the assailant will be lucky if one of the cops don't go ahead and kill him, before the trail even starts.

well, it said most people were sleeping, those were probably the dead ones. But still if I saw someone coming at me with a knife, I would either run, or hit him with something

I you look a China you'll see the crime rate is climbing about 10 percent a year. Many attacks in schools are taking place there now also. The weapon of choice there is knives also.

The thing that's changed there is the press and media have more freedom to show more violence now. They said as soon as something violent is shown on TV someone will try and copy it.

The violence we see every day has made a big impact on us. Its everywhere. Kids see it none stop in video games, music videos, movies, etc....Until we as a society do something to get some morel value back in our kids lives then its only going to get worse.

Guns or any weapon cant take the blame for the actions of people.
