Nikons are great, good price and quality. Bushnell and Burris as well, but I prefer Nikons.

For general, all around use (i.e. most centerfire deer rifles) I'm a big fan of the Leupold Vari-X II in 3-9 x 40
trust me

Right on F250Stroke. I agree 100% Aetec's rule.

Leupold, Weaver, Sightron. I'm sure I'd love Kraut glass if I was willing to part with the kidney and right arm it takes to buy one of the dang things.

I own 8 scopes. Burris scopes are top of the line. Best buy for the money. I have two of the 12 power Burris target scopes that are outstanding. Clear vision, hold the setting for long periods of time.
Purchased a new Nikon shotgun scope this past fall. Sorry piece of junk.
At 2 1/2 power the vision is clear. Turn it up to 7 power and vision becomes fuzzy and distorted. Use the eyepiece to clear it at 7 power and then the lower power becomes distorted. Tried to contact Nikon for warranty and cannot receive an answer. I have other Nikons that are excellent scopes but they were not made in Pakastan as the new one.

Simmons.
Seriously. The $40 "Deerfield" or "Whitetail" scopes are primarily what we top ours with (any that DO get scoped anyway.) They do what we need and the price is right.

Leupold for me on rifles, I have burris handgun scopes and they have been OK but like the Leupold rifle scopes better.
