Why???? is this intended to be an indicator of a good or bad hatch? Doesn't seem too scientific to me?

Doesn't seem to scientific you?? It's not, just simple, initial field observations.
Let's put it this way, if several report seeing 8-10 poults per hen sighting, this will be a good sign that things will be lookin' up for the 2009 spring season.

These heavy rains & cooler temps can't help the little ones.

Great topic, haven't seen any yet but many farmers have been cutting hay for several weeks! Hope they didn't bust up many nest.

Sadly they will, it's inevitable. Just have to hope they won't run to many hens through the haybine.
Saw 9 little ones Saturday with their mother. They were very small about 6" tall I reckon. Location was madison county. I was only about 10 yards from the hen and the little guys were about 5 yard away on the edge of field. She wasn't about to leave them so I just backed away and watched them meander off.

I'm in SW Bracken County. We spotted probably a dozen hens over last weekend, but nary a poult. I'm not overly worried. We usually do not see poults out walking until June.

I have seen 25 to 30 hens over the last couple weeks. I have seen single hens, 4 in a group, and as many as 8 in another group. I have yet to see a single poult. Granted some of them were quite a distance away making poults hard to see but several were also close enough that I should have been able to see little ones if they had any. Whats everyone else seeing at this time of year?
still not seeing anything? come on guys, this is sort of scary.

As dry as it has been, I would think it would be a great hatch.

Saw one hen with 10 small poults, and another hen with 5 much larger poults (they could fly). Also saw 4 hens that were flocked up together, so maybe they will renest. Seems to me, the best broods in the last couple years were from summer hatches.

I am seeing more poults this year than ever before. This week I have seen Dozens from 2-3 weeks old up to 3/4 grown. Two hens in a field above my house had over 20 youngsters with them.
Topping that off: Tuesday AM I came home and heard a gobbler raising heck close by. Soon two gobblers were sounding like it should have sounded this spring. I walked to the top of the hill and there were the two gobblers in strut working a hen. They all headed off to the neighbors property and out of sight still gobbling thier heads off. More gobbling than I heard all of the state season. I was concerned because of the extreme cold and late freeze we had it would cause harm to the nesting. Sure didn't hurt it. Seems many were late or renested if damage was done. Local farmers are concerned about of surplus of turkeys due to crop damage.
