I feel somewhat ignorant for not knowing the answer to this but I've never really thought about it.

I have a TN coworker who has located a handgun at a dealer in KY that he is interested in because of the price.

Can he purchase and take possession of the gun at the dealer or does it have to be shipped to an FFL'd dealer in TN for the transaction? I know the latter is legal but the cost of shipping and transfer would more than negate the cost savings.

Thanks in advance.

I'm fairly certain it has to be shipped, although there is a new KY Law on the books (I think) regarding this very matter.

I'm about 99.9% sure it has to be shipped to an FFL holder. Most, if not all, will ask for about $25 for the transfer. Have him see if the local dealer will match the price of the out-of-state dealer. Sometimes this works as the delaer MIGHT make more than the $25 if he sells you the gun and not jsut the transfer fee.

Good luck

I purchased a new Remmington Rifle at the Bass Pro shop in Indiana. Gave them the the money, filled out the paperwork. but the gun in the car, drove home to Kentucky. The Bass Pro guys knew that I was a Kentucky resident. But maybe handguns are different.

Yep, handguns are different.

Yep, long guns can be purchased in neighboring states, but handguns must be purchased by an individual in his/her own home state... meaning it must be transferred to a Tennessee FFL.

ATF was at the shop yesterday and limps is right, handguns must be purchased in your home state
