Very good post.
When I was in 5th grade a boy in the class who was much larger than me came up behind me on the play ground and started choking me because his friends dared him to do it. I was young and scared but knew I had to do something so I started throwing punches over my shoulders. One of them landed squarly on his nose. He immediately let go and started crying because blood was gushing to the ground. No teachers witnessed this but someone told a story later because I was called to the office later that day. The Principal said that this student and several other students said I had punched the boy in the nose for no reason. She said that if I had intentionally hit this boy for any reason I would be in big trouble. I told her what actually happened except for the part where I was swinging at the kid. I said I was struggling because I couldn't breathe and the back of my head rammed into his nose. She then gave me a lecture about rough housing and told me I had better not ever do that again. The student who was choking me was never punished. But that student never messed with me again because he knew I fought back.
