I like to root for horses whose owners have KY ties. Here's a few this year.

Dominican & Sedgefield

Silverton Hill is the namesake of Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton, who also own the top 3-year-old Sedgefield. The Hamiltons have been in Saddlebred business for several years, including 1999 World Champion 3-gaited horse Yes It's True. His sale allowed them to get into the Thoroughbred business, winning their first stakes with Neon Shadow in 1999. Tommy founded a coal mining company with operations in Kentucky and Virginia. Bonnie was a surgical nurse for 25 years in Owensboro, KY. Their 1,500 acre farm is near Springfield, KY, about 40 miles from Louisville. In addition to having a seven-furlong Polytrack training surface, the farm also is used for grain, hay and cattle raising. The farm is home to about ten broodmares and their foals. This would be their first entrant in the Kentucky Derby.

Any Given Saturday

WinStar Farm, Maverick Racing and Padua Stable
WinStar Farm is a Thoroughbred racing and breeding operation located in Versailles, Ky that is owned by Bill Casner (pictured) and Kenny Troutt. Casner grew up in El Paso, Texas. In 1963, at the age of 15, he started galloping horses at Sunland Park. He put him self through college at Tarleton State University by galloping throughbreds, including champion Cho Croute. Upon graduation Casner embarked on a training career in the midwest. In 1979 Casner left the Thoroughbred industry. He and Troutt founded Excel Communications. Casner re-entered racing in the mid 1990’s through various partnerships. Mr. Casner is currently chairman of the board for the Thoroughbred Owner Breeders Association, vice chairman and co-founder of the Kentucky Equine Education Project (KEEP), and he serves on the board of trustees for Breeders' Cup. He was also a founding board member for The Race For Education Inc., a national scholarship foundation that provides educational opportunities to children of racing’s backside workers and farm workers. Mr. Casner, his wife Susan and their daughter Kayce are residents of Flower Mound, Texas. WinStar farm encompasses approximately 1450 acres after current development is completed the farm will include 10 barns, a state of the art foaling complex, a newly renovated stallion complex and training barn and research lab. The farm is home to the stallions Tiznow, Speightstown, Distorted Humor, Victory Gallop, and Our Emblem. WinStar has campaigned the stakes winners Awesome Humor, License Fee, Mr. Mellon solely or in partnerships and bred 2003 Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. They had their first Derby starter in 2006, when Bluegrass Cat was second to Barbaro. Up until the spring of 2005, WinStar employed Elliott Walden as their trainer. Walden retired from training to take a position at WinStar, and at that time the horses were spread among a variety of trainers, including Todd Pletcher.

Teuflesberg

Gary Logsdon, Donnie Kelly and Jamie Sanders
Logsdon, 61, is a Bowling Green, Kentucky attorney and lifelong friend of trainer Jamie Sanders. He has been involved with racing for over 30 years, and prior to Teuflesberg, his best horse was the multiple stakes winning filly Spectacular Lisa. Logsdon gave Teuflesberg his name, which mean's "Devil's Mountain" in German. The actual place is located near the Berlin Wall. Logsdon and his wife Amanda have seven children.
Donnie Kelly, 30, is Sanders' fiancee. The couple live on Limestone Farm in Lawrenceberg, Kentucky. Kelly grew up in New Mexico, where his family was involved with Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds. His father is a blacksmith. Kelly has worked for trainers Ronnie Werner and Nick Zito. Kelly and Sanders bought Teuflesberg for $9,000 at Fasig-Tipton's October yearling auction.

I think I'm gonna root against this one. For some reason the fact that his wife "Jerry's wife Ann is active in environmental pursuits and is the founder of the Dolphin Connection." rubs me the wrong way. Especially when they are involved in horse racing.

Tiago
Mr. & Mrs. Jerome S. Moss
Jerry Moss co-founded A&M records, which was at the time the largest independent record company when he sold it to Polygram in 1990. A&M recorded such acts as The Police, Burt Bacharach and Joe Cocker. Moss now is the chairman of Rondor Music, which he co-owns with Herb Albert. Jerry's wife Ann is active in environmental pursuits and is the founder of the Dolphin Connection. The Mosses have been involved in racing for about 35 years, winning their first stake in 1983 with Fighting Fit. They won the Kentucky Oaks (GI) with Sardula in 1994, and won the Kentucky Derby with their first and only starter, Giacomo in 2005.

Believe it or not, but I always have my best luck picking a horse that has the word " CAT " in it's name....So my pick this year will be # 6 Cowtown Cat and Scat Daddy...... G/L to all who make a wager on the Derby this year....:)

I'm going with a couple long odds this time around.

Any Given Saturday
Storm in May
Street Sense

They are not in that order but that's the three I'm going with.

I'll take Zanjero because I drew the #3 spot in a pool at work. We drew before we knew the post positions.

It's not betting like a girl, The TVG stat checker has a probable winning combo of 80% win ratio when two horses have a common name in their names in a race...i.e. "cat" The TVG program is where I learned this info and I stick to it if it is an option.......:)

I've been out on the backside every day this week except Thursday.

Of all the horses I've seen, Tiago is a very, very impressive physical specimen. With Mike Smith in the irons, I'll have to give him a play. Smith has been in the money each of the past three years and really knows how to ride this particular race, particularly coming off the pace. The big question is how much the kickback effects him..

I've been a big fan of Great Hunter all winter, and I will still play him despite having the 20 hole. That may not be a bad place to be in the slop.

Finally, Street Sense has been awesome at Churchill since the BC Juvenile last November. He is very fit and he is very, very professional. On top of that he has a great post position. So I can't overlook him.

So I'll be playing those three in the exactas and tris, and looking at one or two more on the walkover to throw into the mix.

I looked and looked at all the entrys and can't find one Rabbit in there anywhere. Last time I was at the races the rabbit won every race....Oh..yall talking about horses not dog's..sorry

Great Hunter sounds good to me as the winner. Need to see which one likes to run in the mud tho before plunking any cash down on any of them.

I nailed it. To be honest though, I boxed Street Sense with Hard Spun and Nobiz Like Shobiz. I couldn't make up my mind. I think Mills will probably stick to analyzing sports he knows such as...

I bet Street Sense and Curlin. Nothing major just 5 across the board on both of them.

Well, like I said, I couldn't throw Street Sense out, and I got on the Hard Spun bandwagon watching the walkover--he looked ready to go.

Mike Smith gave Tiago a heck of a ride, but just couldn't get the horse in gear. That may have as much to do with experience as anything else. Great Hunter was one of the few that got a bump and grind trip. I was amazed watching the replay how little of that there was.

The Preakness will be interesting, to say the least. I'm surprised at how many Derby enries are passing on that race. Nothing's been written on it, but I suspect some are looking at the Barbero experience and deciding that the breeding shed is more worthwhile than the purse.
