Just wondering what to put out in a new patch I just cleared on my farm. I've tried just about everything and have had mixed results. I guess in summing it up, ladino is hard to beat overall.

I'm interested in hearing what others might consider their favorite species for about an acre plot near the center of a parcel. One vote per man.

I vote winter wheat-hands down winner. Reason being it used from Sept thru Feb. When everything else is brown they will travel a LONG ways to the nearest plot. By Nov 1, everything else will be out of gas, with the wheat drawing like a magnet.

I agree with KYHunter. Wheat has been the big producer at my place. The deer would walk through the clover to get to the wheat.

Late planted wheat is definately the best for hunting but for a longer lasting plot that is good more days a year for feed I will always use Imerial Clover. It is a little more expensive than ladino but I have had better success out of the Imperial, better germination, more deer use, lasts well under management. It is the only thing I have seen deer dig snow for in fields. When you look at the total cost of a plot, seed, lime, fert, land, time, a few dollars more for the seed doesn't seem so bad.

Hey Guys need your help on this one. I just planted my first crop of ladino clover, figured so far i have around $6500.00 in 1/3 acre. New 4 wheeler, disc, lime, fertilzer and seed. I went w/ what my soil sample said i needed. How long should it take before i start seeing a result? also if planting winter wheat when should i start? was wondering about planting beans, what are the pros and cons of beans? I have about 2/3 acre left for planting, maybe half clover and half wheat? I live in the southeast part of the state and was just needing some friendly advise from those of you that have been doing this. Thanks for the reply!!!

Multi, my vote is for Roundup Ready Soybeans. It seems like since you're working in a newly-cleared area, you're gonna have a lot of weeds popping up. It's pretty cool being able to spray Roundup to keep weeds under control w/o hurting the beans.

Besides, not to toot my own horn, but I saw as many as TWO deer in my soybeans last year. Turkeys were in it about every day since first of the year, right up until I disced some Ladino seeds in a few weeks ago. I'm HOPING that since I barely disced the soil to get the seeds in, there will be very little weed competition. We'll see.

Rack-Um, yeah, $6500 for 1/3 acre, thats about right<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>. HINT: Don't think about the money involved. Cause at some point, you're gonna think, "Lets see I've spent X amount of dollars, I've seen X amount of deer/turkey, that works out to X amount of dollars per deer/turkey." It can be depressing.

As far as pros and cons of beans, I've heard that in areas with high deer densities, the deer will keep the plants from maturing.

RutNStrut gets my vote,we planted it last year and the results were
amazing. The deer keep it mowed down, freezing weather won't hurt it
reseeds its self for three years if the deer will let it.I also had
winter wheat sowed, turnip tops and rye.All are good but I'll increase
the RutNStrut this year maybe another three acres.

How early can you plant winter wheat? I used imperial clover two years and it did not come up either year.

soybeans........last year on the farm i hunted they had planted some late june beans and the deer kept them mowed down. the beans stayed green well through gun season even though we had had some good frosts..........this year they have also added some food plots with milo, sorgum, oats, wheat, clover mixture. Looked like the same mixture passed out in bags as prizes at the UBK banquett....dont know the name of this mixture but maybe some of what has been used in the above thread..........ez

Rackum. The ladino is good stuff. Deer and turkeys love it. It is a slower growing clover in my opinion than is red but I see more deer in my ladino plot than in my red clover plot.

Wheat is hard to beat if your looking to attract deer during deer season, and turkeys love it to.It's also the cheapest thing you can plant!!Legumes are going to grow antlers{clover, cowpeas, soybeans, alfalfa},but deer won't care much about the perenials after the first frost, and unless you plant several acres, the annuals will get eat-up before deer season.Grain sorghum{milo}is cheap and the deer seem to eat it up when it starts getting cold. They want the carbs and the fat so they can stay warm.Nothing will touch it until it matures and the seed gets hard because of the acid content, that's Oct,Nov.

I have 3 acres of ladino clover.I see deer in that field all spring and summer but rarely in the fall and winter.I plant a couple of small plots with milo and cow peas and a couple of plots in wheat. My deer stands are built over these plots. That's where the deer will be after the first frost.

If I only had an acre or two to plant,I'd plant wheat.

The "wildlife mixes",or "whitetail clover",are going to cost you more money!Just mix it your self.Ladino clover is ladino clover!!!

Rack-um,
Sorry about the late reply,I've been real busy.We get ours from the
NWTF seed program,if you're a member you'll be able too purchase the
seed alittle cheaper. The rut-n-strut is well worth the price.
