I put out about 3/4 acre of the wildlife mix the state gives out last year and it had buckwheat in it as well as other things. The deer were in it nearly every evening. They wiped it out before the end of September. They seemed to especially like the seed heads of the grain sorghum. I guess they liked the buckwheat as well cause it was gone also.

MQ,
We used to plant a small patch of it close to our bee hives, they really loved it and it make great honey. I see it mixed in with QU mix, though there is not much of it. Back when we grew it there were no deer or turkey so I really can't say much for that. You said you were going to plant this fall? We always planted it in late spring. I don't know what it will do in the fall. Anyone else know?

The guy who is pushing me on the buckwheat said he usually plants in early spuing and then replants around july for a fall stand...He is also telling me that it looks something like a pea...Is that right...I think I'll do a search to see if I can find some info..Thanks

Buckwheat is a warm season annual. You only want to plant it in the spring.{may to early june}Deer eat the plant when its young and turkey love the seed,if there's a plant left to make seed!!Same for quail.I didn't get my moneys worth out of it.I wouldn't mess with it unless it was free!!
