I was looking at the harvest results for turkey and saw that as of April 14 only 10 birds have been recorded for LBL. What's up with that? I was expecting more since they have already had the youth and 2 quota hunts. Do you think this was do to bad weather, hard to hunt birds or both?

Both! Those LBL birds are a challenge. They are weary times 2 and know all the tricks. The weather has been nasty and thrown them for a loop as well.

I hunted the 12 & 13 at LBL .... weather was'nt great and I only heard two distant shots both mornings. Thursday was windy as all get out but the birds gobbled good from daylight to about 7am. The only problem I had with them... they were henned up. Even on up in the morning they just didnt want to cooperate. Friday (13th & the weather was worse) .. I changed my strategy a little and you know what they say about "best laid plans"... well that did'nt work either. There are lots of birds in the spot I'm hunting but I know for a fact I'm dealing with a boss gobbler that's got the rest of the boys beat down right now. Combine this with the wind , rain... just makes it tough but I've got a lot of patience.
I'm going to let things calm down a few days and hit them again at the end of next week.
I had high hopes for our farm today crossbow hunting the birds but things just did'nt work there either. Rained heavy till 9 am the just off & on drizzle . Heard two gobbles all morning. I believe if the weather gives us a break and more of the hens get bred... things will change a little if the hunting pressure dont factor in too bad. Did'nt hear.. two maybe three distant repetive shots this morning.... sounded more like quick shots at flushed birds then a single killing shot. Hope the rest of ya'll had better luck.

My grandfather has taken one LBL bird so far this year. I plan to head down this friday to hunt sat and sun morning before heading back to pikeville for work on monday. Hopefully the old man has some tricks in store.

Non quota opens Monday (16) .... all you need is a LBL permit / back country camping permit ( bring tent or sleep in the truck)... makes for a pretty cheap turkey hunt. With state season open... during the week you wont have a lot of pressure over there. Not to mention .. Belews Dairy Bar opened Friday in Aurora ( kind of a land mark for us locals).... cheap dining.
You just need to come on down!!!

I plan on going after work every day that I can. I may have to go by Belews for a shake and burger myself. It's the only place I have to hunt right now so at least I have somewhere to go. I ate tag soup last year but have taken two from LBL in past years. They are hard to hunt, but they are there. Good luck to anyone hunting LBL.
