Came in earlier than I wanted, but I was wet, cold, and busted. Had 6 hens early feed across the bottom I was hunting with no tom in sight. At 0800, I saw a big tom on the next farm about 250 yards away. I called at him a little, and he walked back and forth for 20 minutes on the wrong side of the fence. He kept ducking like he wanted to go under, but it's a woven wire fence. He finally departed. Darn thing went up the field about another 100 yards where there was an older fence and easy crossing, and came over to the farm I was hunting, and I didn't see him until I caught a glimpse at 20 yards, he saw movement or the blind flapping in the wind, and he split. I was set up in a pop-up blind in the big bottom field about 20 yards from the gap in the fence (it stays open all the time, there used to be a gate there). In retrospect, the blind should have been farther away from the gap and maybe more out in the field instead of on the grown up fencerow. He also came in totally blind because I couldn't see behind me. He never gobbled a single time, nor did any bird, and I know there are gobblers there. I'll get him later in the year hopefully. He was looking and was killable even in the flood.

thanks. I also hate hunting out of a blind. He would have been dead meat had I been on the ground like usual, but the rain mandated the blind.

You have a loaner for me? ;) I'd love a double bull; I just haven't invested in one yet.

The only thing about hunting mishaps that is good is the knowlege you gain. Good luck the rest of the season I'm sure you'll connect!
