Despite this being opening morning, the shaman is holed up at camp. The turkey hunting here is dismal. I let Moose and Angus sleep. If the rain would let up a bit, we might try to go out to a sheltered blind, but cheese and rice!!! One wave of wind and driving rain after another does not fill my heart with expectation.
I have heard three shots, one gobbler gobbling, and when I went out on the porch, the last time the rain let up enough to do so, I heard a hen putting out behind the tobacco barn.
Call me a wimp, but I I can wait a while.
The forecast said heavy rain and wind at sunup . . .and then it was really going to get bad.

Gobble Gobble Quack Quack...Holding off here also till the rain clears out. Pouring buckets when I got up at 5 am and has not let up one bit so far. Us old retired guys got plenty of time to pick and choose better days.

I got up and drove halfway to where I was going and the more I drove the more it rained and the wind was blowing my truck around. I turned around and came back home. Drinking coffee and playing on the computer until this weather calms.

Decided to stay at home today. Since I stopped getting paid to do it, playing in the rain and cold has lost much of it's appeal. :)

I just got back, soaking wet and no turkey. Had a good morning, though. I scouted last night and knew just about which tree he was roosted in. I got there well before daylight, and as day broke you would have thought it was the most clear, crisp morning ever. They (turns out there were two roosted together) were gobbling like crazy on the roost!! I was about 70 yards from them under a cedar tree. I gave a few soft clucks and yelps to let them know I was there and they hammered right back, so I shut up and waited. Then a hen flew down to them and they went nuts. I called a couple more times then and they gobbled each time. I watched one gobbler fly down, and he gobbled every once and awhile, then a hen fed her way to about 15 yards from me. I never moved a muscle, but she suddenly raised her head, looked towards me and ran away! A few minuted later, all heck broke loose!! They were putting and flying like something was really after them! I had enough by then, as I was thoroughly soaked, and headed to the truck. About half way there I heard wing beats as a hen was flying right at me! It was a very interesting morning to say the least!!
Hopefully the rain will stop and I can get out there this afternoon. In the meantime I will dry my camo and maybe catch a few Z's :D !
I hope everyone had fun this morning!!!

Tough first morning...at least getting back across the rain swollen creek!
Had one hen at 8am come check out the decoy.
840 heard several distant gobbles
900 close gobble and comes in on a string. He put on a nice show in the rain.

As we were eating lunch three jakes came up to the house, grazing in the pasture. Moose and I got ready , put down the back window and waited for them to show up in the back yard. They got as close as 75 yards in the side yard, but turned around and wandered back.
Here, turkey, turkey turkey!

I wasn't able to sleep last night either. I laid awake listening to the rain all night. I wasn't able to get a turkey today either. Hopefully, I'll be able to sleep tonight, and I'll be fired up and ready to chase them in the morning.
