So it begins.... Leave work late Friday, after 8:00 PM drive to the farm and get set up for two days of camping & hunting with Austin (My Son) Did I mention it's COLD & WINDY?
Alarm bangs at 5:30, We head out and set up, electing not to take the blind (too much to pack in) Big Mistake!! Get set up, No birds..... Finally at 7:15 we hear em start to hammer off, Nothing worked, pitched down and headed the other way. Fast forward several cold and windy hours later.... Because were gonna wait em out. In the feild below us (after the Lime truck bounces around for a few hours:mad: ) I see birds, One, Two, Three, Ya get the picture. Ends up about 18 hens and two longbeards.... About 300 yards away and not at all interested in us. End of Day one, Cold, Wind burnt & battered, but Our spirits not dampened.
Day Two.... We awake again Cold but promptly at 5:00 AM, Pack in the blind and get set up. Got B-Mobile & "Betty" I've named her set up at exactly 8 steps....... 6:05 "GOBBLE"... and they kept coming. If we heard one bird I swear we heard 15. I yelped and got intrest of a few. At one point we had a bird spit drumming and Gobblin' dirctly behind our set up. In any event I work this Bird into a triple Gobble frenzy and he hits the feild. The time is now 6:52 AM. One more yelp and he Hammers, sees our "spread" and comes at full charge stopping periodically to strut his stuff.
Again, at 8 steps This bird hammers once, flogs B- Mobile, Hits strut, I cluck, Head comes up and BANG!!!!!! What a show:)
First reaction was turning the blind over and asking my boy..."What you know bout B Mobile & Betty at 8 steps and a flogging Gobblin Longbeard"
What a difference a day makes, By 6:55 we probally heard 200 Gobbles (NO LIE) and and a dead sure Nuff LIMBHANGER on the ground.
22#, 11" beard w/ a bit of rot (accused the boy of shooting it off at first) One Spur at exactly 1 1/4" and the other just a bit longer. Pics to come I promise, just gotta get to wally mart and get em put on a cd!!!!
