View Full Version : Gobble calls
For those of you who use a gobble call, what brand do you have? I have seen years that this type of call would bring birds into range when no other call would work. I am going to order one from our sponsor and need to hear from the majority what to get.

i think the one i got is made by lohmans, the one that looks like a tube and gobbles when u shake it. never really seen any other kinds.
agree 100% though about this call working when nothing else will. it won't work everytime, but when it does.....:)

Lab, several of my buddys have different gobble calls, and this one, by far, sounds the best IMO:)

I gobble using a " Paddle type box call". Thats' what I would recomend.

if your using these on public land, be careful, some people are dumb enough to shoot at anything that moves

I hate to pack around extra luggage when something could serve as dual purpose.

I don't think a 26lb turkey can squeeze between the trees on that place. :D

Har har hardy har har.:D
Keith, you had better shoot the first thing that comes into range. We need to get your bird out of the way quick so we can focus on getting me the big bird that I have been watching. One of those jakes will suit you just fine.:D:eek::D

Mine is a Red Wolf I believe, and I've called in more than 1 hunter with it.

I use a tube call. To me it sounds more realistic then the shaker type calls.

Safety isn't the only issue to be concerned with in using the gobble imitators. On public land, you will end up having an awful lot of busted set-ups because of the other hunters moving in on what they think is a workable, gobbling bird. There are plenty of other locator calls out there that will shock a gobble out of most birds with lock jaw. I prefer to stay away from the gobble calls, but have to admit that they do work well.
I hunt private land, so the chance of getting a set-up blown because of another hunter is almost nonexistant. If that does happen, I have more problems than losing a bird.

I got an old Butski box call that with the right rubber band tension, sounds exactly like one. Im scared to death however, to employ it!

I also use the Primos, 2 of my friends have different brands that they bought just so it would sound different. In the woods the don't sound good and don't get the response of mine. I never over use it, only use it to locate some time and if a gobbler hangs up I'll use it along with some cutting to convince him he has some competition. I took one 11" bird that was with 3 other Toms after workinbg him for a hour, I found out later that another guy had worked the same birds for 3 days in a row before the day I hunted him but he couldn't get them to come in. He thinks he's an expert to so he wanted to know how " I could have got him" . P.S. Ihad it for 6 years now and it still sounds good.
Good luck!:D

Hammer, that's too funny! Any of them long beards?? That is the only problem with a gobble call. But I've also had slob hunters hear a real gobble and hear me working them and try to sneak in!!

I have a Lynch World Champion that makes a most realistic gobble, but I wouldn't use it on public land and I'm a little nervous using it on my place. The biggest problem with shaker type calls is keeping the durn things quiet in your vest! Tom

Is this the box call with the hen on one side and the gobble on the other? If it is how do you get the gobble out of it to sound effective ?

I've had a couple over the years. I have never heard one that sounded like a turkey in the field.
Opening day in Tennessee this year, I had another hunter on the next ridge. He was in the middle of several gobblers, and he continually used his gobble call. It was so obvious that it was not a turkey.

Yeah, I have never heard one that actually sounded like a turkey either, but they work on turkeys and humans.
I elected to go with the Primos call. Maybe it will be waiting for me when I get home tomorrow so I can try it out over the weekend.

Only use the gobble call in lost case situations. It works, buit don't over do it.

Gobble calls work real well as a locator call too. One afternoon around 1 or 2 o'clock pm, I had made a loud cutt call on my slate and heard nothing, then I grabed my crow call and nothing agian. I then remembered I had my gobbler shaker by HS strut. I shoke it once and a old tom cut loose about a 100 yards away in the bottoms below me. I have only used mine as a last resort locator call and I have never used it to pull an ole tom into range. I believe you can over do it with calling and that a person should use the gobbler shaker as little as possible. Those old toms get wise pretty quick after that first week of hunting pressure.;)

Deadaim, mine has four rubber bands on the lid two on each end. I hold it by the bottom of the front end with the handle end down and the lid away from me and shake it side to side. It sounds just like a gobbler to me. Tom

Very rarely feel comfortable enough to use it but my natural voice or also with a mouth call works pretty good. Had seven jakes all tore up last weekend with my natural voice.;)
