Can anyone help? I ordered a water pump kit for my 1984 Evinrude 50hp. The kit came with a small rubber o-ring. Does anyone know if this o-ring belongs near the top of the drive shaft (there is a groove) or does it fit inside the water pump itself. There is an o-ring in the groove near the top of the drive shaft right now but I don't know if it's there as a result of pulling up the faulty water pump and the o-ring got caught in the groove on its way out.

I've tried contacting Evinrude, but its all automated and I got no returns. Also called a local Evinrude repair guy, and he beat around the bush and I couldn't get a straight answer. I tried a boat engine forum and had one guy say it belongs in the water pump and another said it belongs in the groove on the drive shaft.

Thanks for any advise and I'll be checking in again tomorrow morning.

Can't answer your question myself but if you go to a library they may have a repair manual that would help. If not then go by a repair shop and either pic one up or see if there is one you can browse.

looking at service manual looks like probably on the upper shaft, the seal in the impeller cup should be a little bigger.

Great sight, and got my answer. It belongs on the shaft just below the spines. - Thanks CSS and everyone else who replied. I knew I could count on you guys!
