Hey everybody,
I am a junior at Murray State, and I am finally able to hunt this semester. Ive been looking at hunting LBL and Kaler Bottoms. Kaler Bottoms is new to me, and I like what I have seen so far this year while semi scouting around. I was wanting to know if anyone on here had any idea how hard Kaler is hunted. I am not trying to invade on anyone's hunting area, and im not worried about other people walking across where im hunting for Im just happy to be in the woods. I am more worried about how occupied this area is during hunting season because I do not want myself or other hunters being at risk of meeting shot from another hunter's gun. Basically so I know what to expect. Any help or input is appreciated

The place will look like a Wal Mart parking lot for at least the first week.
Kaler bottoms gets pounded.
I hunted it a lot in years past and killed several birds off of it before most of the surrounding landowners got fed up with people trespassing all over them and quit giving permission to use their land for access.
That place is in horrible need of better access. For as large as it is, there are two public access points... essentially turning it into "private public" hunting for surrounding landowners and their guests.

LBL will probably be your best bet. The non-quota portion ...I believe opens Monday (4/16/06)and during the week theres just not that much pressure there. I would also suggest knocking on some doors around the Bell City / Lynnville (94W & 97S) area in Graves co. Theres quite a few farms in that area and you might get lucky and get access to just turkey hunt.... lots of birds too. Good Luck!!

When I was a student at MSU, I found some of my best places by just knocking on a lot of doors. You'll get a lot of rejections, but every now and then, someone will say yes. I still hunt some of those places to this day, and have killed turkeys and deer off them. Just be courteous and don't give up.

Thank you guys. I know it is late to start knocking for this season but i will give a whirl. A buddy of mine is wanting to hunt with me, have you guys had better luck approaching farmers single handedly, or with a buddy?

It's all about appearances. Don't dress up like rambo when you knock on the door. Also, if you offer to help out on their farm in exchange for a spot, they may be a little more willing to say yes.

I'm sure it depends from farmer to farmer, but in my experience, when they give you permission to hunt, it means you. If you plan on bringing a buddy, definitely make that clear ahead of time. Many times, farmers don't seem to mind if one or two people hunt, but begin to get leery of many more. If someone gives you permission, treat it like gold.
