Well, after 3 years of trying, I finally bagged my first bird today (afternoon of opener.) Had to watch him in the cold rain for 3 hours before he finally came into range... running, at that. Busted him at 30 yards in a flat out sprint.
24.5 lbs - .875 & .938" spurs, 10" beard. Wet as could be.

Bagged this bird at 7:15 this morn on the farm I grew up on. Just started seeing birds in this are a couple of years ago. As a kid squirrell hunting, I never dreamed I'd be turkey hunting those same woods one day. I shot him in the exact spot were I shot my first squirrell about 26 years ago.

Got him about 12:15 this afternoon in Pendleton. He weighed in at 23 lbs with a 9" beard. There was gobbling going on everywhere but this guy was completely quiet and snuck up on me. I didn't know he was there until I heard him puffing up about 25 yards away. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v237/KY_Fried/07bird.jpg

Birds were talking up a storm this morning. This guy had five hens with him and was putting on his best show for them. I was able to coax the hens a 100 yards or so down the edge of a field to a single hen decoy with this big boy in tow. The hens started cackling and telling the new girl she wasn't welcome. After about an hour of waiting them out I was finally presented with a 15 yard shot and the ending was a good one...for me at least. He was 22.5 lbs with 1 1/8 inch spurs and 9 1/2 inch beard. I would say he was a 3 year old bird.

Hunted TX for first time...wish the land owner would have let me killed more than one bird but ol well very appreciative of getting to hunt on private ground that day with outdoor writer Bob Hood. I went down for three days to get away from the normal routine and see a good buddy of mine. hunted Wed and Friday of my spring break...cold and wind like I never seen. I plan on finding a place next year to go back and hunt hard for these guys...Wish easterns would act this way sometimes. (20lb 1 1/8 spur 11 3/4)
