My dad has a mountain cur that will tree the heck out of a squirrel, problem is he will not bark. He will get on the tree, jump up & down and whine. He even caught a squirrel one time & shook the living daylights out of it. Is there anything Dad can do to get this dog to bark when he trees?
Thanks in advance for any & all advice.

Try holding him back from the squirrel. Take him with another dog and when the other dog trees and he is just standing there tie him back a few feet and shoot the squirrel out to the other dog and make him watch the other dog fight and shake it around. Most of the time this will get him excited enough to start barking. Or if you don't have another dog to hunt him with then wait til he 'trees' one and tie him back and shoot it out and tease him with it. Shake it around and hang it up a few feet over his head rub it up and down the tree. Also, you might try just petting him out real good making over on him real well when he is 'treeing'. Just reaffirm his actions. Hope I can be of some help..

Some dogs have the bark in them and some don't. The only chance to develop it in this dog is with another dog that will bark treed like described by 79.

I had a big Airedale that was all bite and no bark. She'd tree and kill everything in the woods and never make a sound.

the nexts sq that dogs trees tie him to the tree and just walk off out of sight and wait till he barks most of the time it's only a few min till they start barking but if it take a half hour just wait when he barks make a big fuss over him you made have to do it a few times

This is the way to do it. Tie him off, and walk away. Don't shoot anything out to him he doesn't tree on. Leave him there till he barks. When he does pet him up good and give him a treat.
