Anyone use an unusual or non-traditional upland bird dog? I may try to use my Chesapeake Bay Retriever. . . I assume that uplandchessies has.:)

I took my mut a few times. He is part basset hound and part beagle. He retrieves pretty good the only hard part is getting the bird out of his mouth.

I've heard of someone using a standard poodle. Heck, isn't that what they were originally bred for? Hope you didn't do the poodle haircut, though. Your buddies may tease you mercilessly.:D

I've been working a young Gordon for a friend. He has a kennel in Minnesota, in past years he raised English but has expanded into Gordon's. She got a point on a grouse yesterday afternoon. She turned 8 month last week. I thing she's going to make a good one.

Anyone have anything good to say about Boykin Spaniels? I've only heard a little about this relatively new breed.

Have been around several. the ones I've obseved were real hunters being excellent retrievers & worked close. If flushing dogs are your bag, I'd give them high consideration. the ones I've observed had very gentle dispositions & made good for the family pet. there smaller size was a nice feature as well.

The Boykin's not really a new breed. Just few have used them until recently. A women -- whos name escapes me -- writes for Quail Unlimited, and that's her breed of choice. I believe she has a book or two out, as well.
