So who put on this "controlled" burn, the KDFWR or did someone try to do it themselves?

Multi, what was the motivation for doing that particular piece of ground? Going to just let it regenerate on it's own or plant with something? Just curious.

It's got some native grasses in it, and it will be allowed to regrow on a 3 year burn rotation. It was over grown pasture without much value for anything. We'll do a firebreak on the edge as a foodplot, and leave the rest for nesting cover for quail and turkey. Total was about 25-30 acres--still got about a thousand to go yet. It'll be a two year project, maybe three when you use volunteer labor and limited resources. F & W couldn't burn it for us because they are behind on schedule because of Feburary's weather.
Multi why do you burn it, compared to bushhogging it or spraying a herbicide on it?

Burning is cheaper than spraying and better. Some of the places couldn't be mowed with a bushhog. This sums it up pretty well -- http://fw.ky.gov/burning.asp

It almost looked like it got a little out of hand. I know if i was doing it I would have been worried a little. I ussually burn a little at a time . My Grandfather use to burn off the back of his place . & as a kid I really enjoyed it. That was 65 years ago. He taught me a lot about burning into the wind & not with the wind . Wish I could get 5 or 6 guys to burn off my sons farm . It really is better than bush hoggin.

It never got at of hand, It did get hot, which we knew that. We had a plan and a back up plan and everything worked as planned. We burned exactly the number of acres we intended to burn. The only thing that could have been better would have been to have the KYDFWR to do it, but they couldn't. I've done burns with them before and so had on of my helpers, so it wasn't our maiden. Still, I'll use the Depts. help anytime I can get it and have a meeting scheduled with my PLB coming up soon.

i am on the local vol fire dept and there was a small woods fire in one of my hunting spots a few weeks ago and last week i saw turkeys feeding in the burn area. guess it makes the acorns and such easier for them to find.?

I went past the BGAD this evening and saw around 30 deer feeding in a small field that the military burnt off a few weeks ago. The fields on either side were the same type fields but hadn't been burned. Those deer were sure liking the new growth.
