I took my first fall shotgun turkey Sat. morning. Hunting around the edge of Lake Cumberland, I found a fairly large flock feeding across a creek channel from me and spent almost 30 minutes mimmicking their calls with a raspy diaphragm call. One hen in particular began answering with more intensity and I began to cutt, purr and yelp as she did. She decided to fly across and see who was arguing with her and most of the flock flew across with her. In minutes I was surrounded with around 25 turkeys, scratching and feeding. She never stopped giving me grief and she was was the largest of the group. So, she came home with me. Her crop was full of beech nuts, large orange spiders, beetles, assassin bugs, and acorns. I will definitely try this again next year. I will probably hunt this same flock for the rest of the season with my bow as I have had one close call with a turkey that saw me draw a few weeks ago. Keep after them! The next season should have even larger flocks.

Bagged a nice fall tom this afternoon. 19.5 lbs, 1 1/8" spurs & 11.5" beard. Longest beard I've ever taken, by a full inch. Saw several other toms too.
Since we're including crop contents[:)]... man it was stuffed. Several acorns, half-dozen or so grasshoppers, several kinds of seeds I couldn't identify, clover, etc. I truly believe they'll eat anything they can fit through their throats.

Where abouts around Lake Cumberland? Was it on private or public land. I am just trying to find a good place to go Turkey hunting around the Lake Cumberland Area.

Great job, guys. And don't worry about taking a fall hen. Statistically, the only impact was that you got to eat her before the coyotes did. Those of you who have hunted the December season, what did you think of the October season in comparison?

While I blanked it was a great time to be out in the woods. If I remember last year's December season was the same time as a big ice storm. No worries about that in October[:D]. I hope the October season is a permanent fixture for KY turkey chasers.

Had an easier time pinning down a well-used food source. Then again, I was hunting a different property that what I've hunted in the Dec. seasons. Other than milder weather, didn't see much difference. Enjoy them both.
