I'm was wondering what caliber you vetern coyote callers use for killing yotes. I just started last year and I'm addicted to it. I'm fixing to buy a new rifle and was wondering what's the best all around rifle for distance but won't explode if it hits a small limb or something. I've been using a 7mm because it doesn't matter about distance or brush but it's an extreme overkill especially for a full body mount. My hunting buddy bought a new 22-250,when we called one up the other day at 50 yrds, he shot and hit a small limb at about 30 yards, needless to say the yote laughed and was gone. If it had been the ol' 7mm,it wouldn't have mattered but there would have been nothing left but hair. Anyway I'd like any and all suggestions. We shoot more distance than brush anyway if anybody wants to know. Thanks.

I have a Remington model 700 VLS in .243 haven't shot any yet but I've read good things about it for yotes.

The .243 is probably the "best" choice; low recoil, less wind drift than any of the .22's and very very accurate. I have some 75 grain hollow-points(reloads) I'd love to see meet with one! [:D] They are killed with almost everything;(most are probably killed while deer hunting so whatever one has at the time is used) Let us know what you choose(and if you have any on the ground with it!)

I have an H&R Ultra Varmint in .243. I am also looking at a .223 due to cheeper ammo. Everybody needs two varmint guns don't they?

I'm leaning on getting a 22-250 or a .243, but does a .243 make a big exit hole?

Yes,unless you use the hide hunting solids. The 243 V-Max loads will cut them in half so I guess that wouldn't be a hole?

Is the .17 cal. HMR legal and would that be a good choice? I hear it is extremly accurate and I am thinking about buying one for my daughter to target shoot with. may she would let me borrow it now and then.

The 17 hmr was tested extensively in texas on predators and found very wanting when it came to coyotes.Texas coyote's are a bit smaller than ours here. Fox and bobcat were alright. I prefer the 22-250 and light hollow points or 55 grain spire points.Jimmie
I am using a .223 New England with 50 grain Winchester Ballistic Silvertip. I haven't killed but one with it, but was very impressed.

i have 2 predator guns, both are savage 24's. one is 22 hornet over 12 guage, the other is 223 over 12 guage. i use ballistic tips in both. i get a little more range from the 223 and the ammo is cheaper.

Last spring I bought a Remington .222 to shoot coyotes with but it dropped way off over 250 yards. So I sold it. I used to have a Ruger m77vt laminate stock with the heavy gray bull barrell in 22-250. That was the most accurate gun I ever shot. With the 6-20x50 aetec that was on it, at 100 yards I could put 3 shots within a dime off a table. At the time it was the only gun I had and was real heavy packing it around deer hunting so I traded it off. I now have a 25-06 and am going to use that.

justdace, a fellow I work with reported shooting two coyotes with his new .17. His buddy had to finish both off with his .270. Both were head shots, neither penetrated the skull. He loves the gun & is killing the snot out of squirrels with it, but says he will not try it on a coyote again. He even doubts he would try it on 'coon sized game.

I use my Ruger M77 Mark II .270 on coyotes and deer. It might leave a hole but you can always sew i'd rather have my coyotes dead then runnin away laughin at me
my dad uses and Winchester model 70 .220 swift and gets the job done just fine too so
i guess theres a wide variety of guns you can use.

I sure thank all you guys on the advice. Just thought I'd let you know I bought a remington 7600 synthetic .243 this week. It shoots awesome. I bought the Remington Varmint V-max shells and it groups them perfectly. We went yesterday in the snow but didn't call none in. I can't wait to draw first blood with it. Maybe next week I will.

i have had good succes with both the 223 and 243. the 243 will shot a little farther and buck the wind a little better and it stops them in there tracks if u hit them right. if you can find a good bullet in 85 grain i think it would be best for yotes. i use a 90 grain handloads. for the 223 its a howa and was very cheap for a varmit rifle w/ a nice 6-24x50 scope. i saved my money from my summer job to buy that rifle and it works great. "my father and i collect guns for a hobby" i love varmit hunting specially yotes. i am only 13 but i have shot over a dozen of those things now.

I'm new to all this coyote hunting business, would like to try it but have a question - would a 7.62 x 39 (sks) work? I have a scope on mine.

My first choice for most hunts is my Savage 10FP in 308. If you believe in overkill, then yes it's overkill, but I use it because I'm used to shooting it and it's one of the most accurate rifles I own. Also, those 175gr 30cal bullets have plenty of knockdown power for the long range shots.
My second choice is a Savage 112BVSS in 22-250 (old model, before they came out with the short action). It's also very accurate, but it has a lot of wind drift past 300yds and it doesn't have enough power for the long range shots.

The 30cal bullets will put a decent size hole in them, but it will certainly work. There's really only two requirements for hunting any type of game: #1 - make sure you're using a caliber and ammo that is capable of a one shot kill, and #2 - shot placement means everything

Yotes can be tough, .17 is not a good choice. I shoot em with my dads 220 swift or my 223. I have taken a few out with my .308 win during deer season. Shot a few with a 22 mag, but they were close and easy heart shots.

I recently bought a new heavy barreled 22-250 Savage with the new Accu-Trigger adjustible trigger. It shoots extremly well. It costs a lot less than alot of other popular rifles and will shoot with the best of them.

I see this is a current topic so I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. About any .22 centerfire will do the trick and they're better on hides than a .30 caliber. No one I know of uses bigger than a .22 centerfire thats gonna be skinning them to sell. A friend of mine uses a .14-221 Walker that have all but two been dropped like lightning hit them at 100yds.! If you are calling, how many are gonna shoot at one that is coming in, at 300yds. or better? No one I know around here. Now if you're just gonna shoot them for the hell of it, anything will work thats gonna cut them in half. Some guys I've seen on sites use a 12ga. with slugs, guess they're not wanting the hide. That'd be like me shooting one with the 45-70 using my 535gr. bullets, just never has occured to me. Go with .220 Swift, .223 or 22-250 you'll be alright.
