We are fishing Barkley or Kentucky lake this weekend, all weekend. I am going to be throwing a variety of different baits to get the big ol' bass to bite. I am going to start with some crankbaits and suspending jerk baits. Here are a few I am going to start off throwing:

And finally, here is my GO-TO bait. It is a Mark Davis signature Bomber Flat-A. I have caught more fish off this bait, in this color than any other crank bait in my box.

I will also be throwing some Carolina rigged lizards and Jig-N-Pigs if I can find some wood structure. I've been reading that the bass are biting pretty good on main lake points and some fish have been caught in the creek mouths. I'm hoping the water temp creeps up a little more by the weekend.

Its supposed to warm up a good deal by this weekend so I'd hope the water would a little bit. I love those bombers...I have caught more fish on my model A in solid white than anything..other than soft plastics.

Don't leave these lakes w/out throwing a Strike King 3x "Zero"(pumpkin-seed or some form of green); especially if the bite is tough.

We must be fishing the same spots. We kick butt with the white Bomber A's in clear water and the green in tinted water.

Hey Xi,

What pattern is that Mark Davis Bomber called? Interesting color combo.

Good luck.

I will give you one sage bit of wisdom from spending my entire life on these lakes.

Throw something at them that everyone else isn't. ;)

It's called pearl shad. I have caught more fish off this color bait than any other crank bait I own. they don't make the Mark Davis signature bait anymore, but they still make the Pearl shad color. You should pick one up.

Question - How do you pick them out before you see the color of the water?

When I go bait shopping for hard baits, I always pic out stuff that I think most people wouldn't even think about trying. I have some pretty ugly baits, and some weird bright ones too. They all work great because its something the fish don't see much of.

I'm just taking a guess on what I have had luck on before at Barkley. I'll change colors and baits accordingly.

I would just take my jig box and pitch away. Caught several 6lbs.+ fish there this time of year and one almost 8lbs.

That is one of my biggest fishing problems. I HATE throwing jigs, and I don't fish them near as often as I should. I know they produce large fish more often than not, but I just can't bring myself to throw one.

Spinner baits are good in about any body of water, especially one with a lot of buck brush. You showing some, but in muddy/murkey water you'll do better without the chrome blades.

As for jigs, some people don't like to fish slow like that, but in the Spring a good flipper will out fish any caster with a jigging pole or flipping outfit. You need good murkey water to get close to the fish, but the jigs are deadly when you learn to fish them in tight.

The lake levels aren't high enough yet to worry about flipping/pitching jigs this weekend. ;)

Most visible structure is only in a foot or two of water if it's in the water at all.

Perfect for jigging pole work. One of the biggest bass I've caught was in less than a foot of water and had his fin exposed above the water line.

If you're planning on fishing a jig/visible cover pattern this weekend, bring plenty of gas money. :D

Older lakes don't have a lot of visable cover, but there's always some cover to hold fish. There's all sorts of cover that fish will hold on in the spring.

KY Lake bass follow a fairly predictable cover routine each spring. Flipping and pitching plays a big role -- but not yet. Like Quacker said, most of our visible cover is high and dry, or in a few inches of water right now, due to the lake being near winter pool. I'll promise you, from some fairly reliable sources ;) , you aren't going to do much on that pattern here just yet.

Bass are nearing the end of their rocky points/jerkbait/rattle trap phase here. Those lures pictured should do fairly well on that pattern for a little while longer. Once the water starts coming up, it'll be time to look at the shallow cover, secondary points, and flats. They call that the "yellow flower" pattern around here. The water temp gets into the 60s and the bass start fanning nests.

Hard to argue with that logic.

Besides, what do I know since 4 days ago this very moment I was actually sitting there catching fish instead of sitting here behind a computer. :D

We fish a shallow bank on Kentucky across the lake from the canal with alot of boat docks. We've caught alot of pigs out of brush around the docks christmas trees probably.:p I use a pitch'in presentation even when bank fishing 20yds. off the bank because the entry into the water is quieter. Most people cast I just prefer to flip (probably because pitchin a jig is my favorite;) )
