It's been a while since I hunted them, but for the most part, I'd say the answer to your question would be yes. As you know, it would be a violation to kill a coon out of season, so those still hunting probably wouldn't answer truthfully. Coon hunting can be defined as many different sports. You have meat hunters--those that hunt during the shake out and kill season for the fur and sometimes the meat. You have competition hunting--those that hunt the night hunt circuits, where the coons aren't killed and you hunt for a score, similar to a field trail for rabbit dogs or bird dogs. Then you have the pleasure hunting guys--those that just like to get out and run the dogs, anytime or any season. On average, most will kill everything they tree during the shakeout and kill season, and maybe one per night during other times. The weapon of choice has always been a cheap .22 rifle and CB caps, hardly noticable over a hard treeing dog.

Something i would like to ask you coonhunters what type of hunter would kill lots of coons and just throw them out on the side of the road. I don,t hunt coons but i witnessed this just the other day . I found 12 dead coons throwed out in a pile. Just wondering what,s the meaning.

well, they are not too good eat, and a coon hide with bullet holes or teeth holes is not worth anything. some people eat em, but they are not much.

coons are real thick in places,,and are nusciances,,if you found 12 piled up,,they probably came from a farmer that trapped them,,for getting in his stock feed.
Evryone that has gave me permission to coonhunt this year said i can go,as long as i kill everyone i tree,,said if they hear i'm not killing them,,i can't come back.

I once BBQ'd a coon was a big old one It takes a lot of preperation with getting all the fat cut off and boiled and skimmed off. but in the long run it was well worth the time. It tasted like chicken. Enough so that I fooled my ex mother in law. WoW was she ever mad when she found out what she ate... Was finger lickin good.

the main thing on a coon,,is thier is a wax kernel right behind the front leg,,this must be removed if you want a good eating coon.

My dad quit letting people hunt if they don't shoot'em. They get in the barn, pull 2 concrete blocks off of a 55 gallon drum and get feed everywhere, every night. He had a guy come put some traps out and he caught 2 big boars the first night. He's busy and aint been back since. Just ain't to many people that hunt'em around the farm anymore.

I was always taught you kill it, you eat it. Or give it away to someone who will. Whether it be coon, squirrle, deer, or rabbit, anything. :)
