I'm considering buying a rifle chambered in 280. Pro's and con's ? Here's what I know about them. Ammo is costly compared to a 270. Ammo is not redily available everywhere. That's about it, Thanks

No deer in America will know the difference between the 270, 280 and 30-06. If you like to have something different, it's a good way to go. If you like to reload, it's a good way to go. You can scavenge your buddy's 30-06 brass, resize it, and have a never ending supply. .284 bullets can be down to 115 grains, and up to about 175 grains.

If you don't reload, it could be tough to find your favorite ammo if the local Wally World decides not to carry it anymore.

THANKS for the info Trustme. I do not reload. Sounds like I need to forget it. I was considering the 280 due to the fact I gave my son the 270. I will just buy another 270 instead.

I think you are correct. The 270 is a dandy. As are the others, too.
Bullet diam. for the three are .277, .284, .308
Common deer weights are 130 gr, 140 gr, 150 gr.
Common elk weights are : 150 gr, 154 gr, 180 gr.

All from the same 104 year old brass case that has been squeezed down or stretched out to accept different bullet diameters. All have good velocities, good trajectories, and good energies. A few hundreths of an inch in diameter and a few grains in weight up or down won't be noticed by you or the game.

I agree 100%. Someone tried to sway me to the 280 but after hearing "the rest of the story" I'm leaning with another 270. I have a 300 Win Mag and a 243. The 270 is closer to the middle and I liked the way it behaved. How do you feel about the 7mm-08 ? I know it is a short action 308 necked down to a 7mm and again I have not seen alot of bullet choices for it. 140 gr is about it for factory loads. This rifle's primary function will be Whitetail, Goat, Ram,and Caribou. My daughter has one of them and loves it. THANKS for the advice and the info. :D

I love the 7mm08. Very mild mannered. I reload for it, tried the 154 gr and am now on the 140. My deer hunting has been limited in the last few years but I still get it out and poke holes in milk jugs.

I think if I had it to do over, I'd have gone with the 7mm Mauser. Same performance, long action, slightly lower pressure.

I understand on the Mauser. I am going to ponder it some more and choose one of those 2. The .270 or the 7mm-08. It will probably end up being the 270 since I can buy it in a LH rifle. I don't think Browning makes an A-Bolt 7mm-08 in LH ?

Do you know anybody that might have some 45-70 Kraag ammo ? I am trying to locate some. Thanks,,,

Just off the top of my head, the Krag shoots 30-40 ammo, not 45-70. I'm sure there are websites of Krag devotees. There are still a few of the rifles floating around, but I don't know anything about them.

This is a Winchester made in the late 1800's. Octagon barrel. English style stock with metal butt plate. I just called him and he said the barrel reads 38-40 on it. It is a wierd looking shell.

38-40 is mainly a pistol shell.

Hmm. I looked at the gun last night and it is not a pistol ? I think what I will do is take a look under a magnifier glass to make sure I didn't miss something. It would not be good. :D

Thanks for the link and the help westkybanded.

CL , just as an fyi, the Hornady lite mag rounds for the 7mm-08 nearly duplicate .280 factory loads, so it's like having a short action .280 .

My wife shoots one in an Encore, and I have to say I've been very impressed and for what you're talking about I seriously doubt you'd be able to tell any difference performance wise between a 7mm-08 and a .270 out to at least 300 yards......

I handload 100 grain hollowpoints for varmints and plinking for her and it recoils maybe like a .243 with those..... I've also loader her some 120 grain SSP (single shot pistol bullets) for fun, and they are scary accurate....I'd bet they'd do a number on a yote, and would do the job on Ky deer as well, though she uses the Hornady 139 SP on those and took a nice buck this past season with hers.....one shot, DRT (Dead Right There)

Jack O'Conners wife used a 7mm Mauser on just about everything, (even in Africa) and anything it can do the 7mm -08 can do, with a shorter action, and with modern steel and loadings.... Mr. Bell also killed many elephants with the 7mm Mauser fwiw...

I'm a huge fan of the 7mm-08.......I think for most of the hunting most people do or likely ever will, it is "perfect" or as close as any one round could be at least..

Thanks Ace My daughter shoots a Rem Model 7 chambered in 7mm-08. I didn't think much of it until we competed in a shooting comp this last summer. After she was done I spent some time with the rifle. I was impressed at how nice it was. She finished second only due to the fact that the kid that beat her was using a bipod. Katie shot offhand. Targets were clay birds at 380, 400, 420 yds. I liked the feel when the trigger was pulled. I do not reload so the only factory loads I have seen are 120 or 140 gr. I'm doing my homework now on what's avail in a LH unit. ;)

The Barnes 120's will do anything you'll need from your list, as will the 140 Nosler Partitions including Moose and Elk, IF you ever venture for them, and don't want to take the "big rifle".... ;)

As a note of interest the Nosler Ballistic tip in 120/7mm is a tough bullet it's taken several Elk out west (including shoulder shots that exited)....

That's from as I recall, the 7mm-08, .208 AI, 7mm Mag, and 7mm shooting times western.....quite a range of speeds there.....fwiw :)

Please tell your daughter that is some awesome and impressive shooting, especially for off-hand!!

My "hat is off" to her!

They are very flat shooing, hit hard and mild in the recoil department , a very hard combo to beat imo

Katie has taken a Ram and a cow Elk with the 140 gr factory ammo. The Ram was a 190yd heart shot, the Elk was a 145yd head shot. Don't want to waste that meat. :D My only reservation is the ammo cost vs a 270. IF I find a deal on the 7mm-08 it may make the difference. ;)
