Todays thunderstorms brought them about by the gobbs tonight. i got over 3 dozen in 30 minutes. I hardly ever fish with them anymore other than to catch blugills to use for bait.

I use them for cats and panfish on farm ponds.

On some days they are still the best catfish bait there is.

When I fish smallmouth in Lake Ontario, I rig a tube bait, then slide a nightcrawler up the hook and into the tube. I only leave about a 1/4-inch hanging out. Works great because the bass can't get at the worm, but the scent and taste (if they tase worms?) entices them to hit.

I almost never go fishing without a tub of night crawlers. If nothing else is going right you can always fall back on fishing for bluegills!

I don't think there is a freshwater fish that swims that won't eat a night crawler if it's in front of its face.
I wish I had them around my place but the soil is not good for them.
Back in the early 70's when I first moved north to work I made a lot of extra money catching them and selling them to a local bait shop for 25 cents a dozen. My goal each night I hunted them was 100 dozen and I very seldom failed reach that goal. The bait shop furnished the cups and lids and I would crawl around and catch them place a dozen in each cup, snap a lid on and the wife would follow and pick up the cups and put a bit of moss in. That was in the day when $25 was not bad for a few hours of getting slimed....:D

I still use them. I usually only bankfish early on in the year for catfish and perch (drum). They are great for that. I live right on the Ohio River and my yard is full of them. My son is 8 and loves to catch them so I usually have a bucket of them from March thru June.
Try tipping a jig and grub combo with a piece about the size of an M and M for Sauger!!! Talk about getting them to hold on when they are short striking.

I use crawlers alot on Erie, sometimes go through 4-6 dozen a day.Use them with a worm harness for walleyes. Many get stolen by drum, perch, white bass, etc.

I fish the Ohio a lot for cats and drums, where abouts are you on the river? maybe we could get together and do some catfishing this summer. I only bankfish too.

I don't do much catfishing in the summer. I just fish for them in the early spring. I mostly get into angling for bass and sauger after March and early April.
I live in Lewis Co. There is alot of bank fishing opportunity around here. About anybody will let you fish on their property. There is public access also.

I usually don't go after them until after turkey season. I fish the Concorde area quite a bit. Where is the public access you are talking about? Is it the Lewis WMA?

Yes there and also there is an old Dam near the Concord Area. If you go in off of Rt. 8 in Vanceburg, when you cross the RR tracks there is a ballfield and school bus shop. That is the old Dam. I believe it is still public accessible.
