The elkhorn has some of the best smallmouth fishing anywhere. Only problem is acess. We rent a canoe and have a blast. take your ultralight and some brown grubs and hold on.Its in between Lex and Frankfort.

Ok guys.... Since I'm never in that area much anymore, I'll let a cat out of the bag...

Two rods: One ultralight, One Medium weight (whatever you would use for bass)

Bait: Crickets and cricket hooks for ultralight, 2/0 or larger straight shank hook for bass rod.

Accessories: Big Cahones....

The foot bridge leading into the Kentucky Horse Park.... Pool on the right side of the bridge. Catch 4" to 6" bluegill with cricket. Grasp bluegill firmly by the tail, and whack his head on the bridge to get him twitching... Get bigger rod, and hook bluegill thru lips. Toss onto surface and hang on....Biggest I ever took out of there was close to 8lbs on one of those crappy de-liar scales.

I had an inside source of permission back in the day, and I don't know how security will take to it now. The tourists WILL stop to watch you. Closest thing to a sure thing in fishing I've seen. Done it dozens of times and it's always worked.

I fish all over the place around here. What kind of fishing you want to do? Weisenberger Mill was my secret spot. I haven't done much fishing since my son was born but I'll be hitting it hard this year! Here's a link to where I'm talking about. I fish right at the bottom of the dam in the top picture. Best way to get these is straight down Leestown Rd and look for the sign on the left a few miles out. LARGE bluegill and some nice smallmouth. I've waded downstream a couple of miles countless times without anyone saying anything to me. I need to try that place at the Horsepark! Wanna go??

I have fished all over Lexington for 25 years. I've probably snuck in to every cemetery in the area at night and maybe a horse farm or two if I just happened to know the night watchman.:D

I have caught big bass in places you wouldn't believe there were any fish..

I have been lucky enough to secure a great pond just a few miles from my house but I used to wade S. Elkhorn at least 3 times a week between Versailles rd. and Elkchester. I kind of gave that up since the laws changed to say that you are trespassing if you are in the creek. I could still go to my old spot, but I'd rather not have to fight with people about "thier" fish.

I think my all time favorite place in Lexington would have to have been the rock quarry out G-town road by the interstate. The water was so clear there that you could watch your bait on the bottom at 12-14 feet. I caught some HUGE bass out of there, but like most places things change. It got fished out in short order and the company that owned it changed hands. It was a hell of a place to goose hunt too because the water never froze..

What I always did in town was to wait until after dark and throw a buzz bait. If there are bass in there, it won't take long to find out. You'd be surprised at how many people go to a lake and bring home fish and just decide to throw them in the nearest pond rather than clean them. We caught an 8 lb and a 5lb bass from the pond right past turfland mall on Harrodsburg rd years ago.

I have seen some good fish come out of there, but it's been several years ago. They must catch something there. I drove by there late saturday night last weekend and there were a bunch of people out there fishing.

While at EKU about 10-12 years ago, I did most of my fishing in Silver Creek wading for smallies with an ultralite and rapala wee crawfish plugs. There used to be several access pionts but I have forgotten road names. There were times we would catch 50 or more smallmouth by wading a mile or so down the creek looking for holes holding deep (2-5 ft) water. It used to be a great creek and it helped me get through college. There are also several ponds on the WMA in Madison County and the city lake was a decent place as well. Don't forget KY River that is close by too.

I fished Silver Creek when I was at EKU as well. Although I used to hunt dove at the WMA over there, I never fished it. SEVERAL good looking ponds though.

It depends what you want to fish for. There are several access points at the river close to Lexington. I fish the locks at wilmore, at the end of Tates Creek and Winchester quite a bit. If you can get permission the lake on Richmond road across from Denny's used to be great, only place around here where I've caught perch, big ones too.

Jacobson is alright, I used to do alot of european style carp fishing out there. Some people knock it but I've got a picture of my son with a grass carp from last year that weighed 48 lbs and always catch multiple double digit fish. The biggest cat I've caught in there was a 32 lb blue. There are also some huge bass, crappie, catfish and walleye in there. I take my canoe most of the time now, but you can do good around the drain where the water flows.
Good luck, Ted

I almost forgot about the lakes (reservoirs actually) behind Sonnet Cove Apartments behind Henry Clay high school. It's the two big bodies of water across the road from Lexington Mall. I can give you directions if you want them. I've hooked quite a few HUGE bass and some big crappie and gills. I can't believe I forgot about that. There several easy public access points and a few good hidden spots as well. You can launch a canoe, kayak, paddleboat, or sailboat from the dock.

I've got a good buddy that lives on the Island out there past Henry Clay (I think they are the same lakes by Sonnet Cove. There are some real nice fish in those lakes back there. He has a little jon boat that he uses on the lakes back in there. I'm not sure what the rules are for access if you don't live on the lake somewhere. He was just telling me last week of a kid that caught a 5lb. bass off his dock.

Same water. As you drive across the dam on the Island, the water on the left is fair game. The water on the right is only fishable from a boat or wading according to some residents I've talked to.

The rules must have changed since I fished it. It used to be mandatory that you had a pass to fish either of the two. Had several buddies while in college that lived in the apartments. They used to have a watchmen that drove around in a boat checking for that pass.
We caught some very good fish out of that lake.

Have you guys caught any crappie out of those lakes? I may try to take his boat out when it warms back up.

I recall catching 2 or 3 on a crank bait while fishing for bass. We mostly worm fished though.
I do think the Island lake has more crappie than the apartment lake.

There are tons of crappie in both #2 and #3. We caught 75 one day early last spring. They still do have an off duty police officer who drives around and checks for lake passes. If you don't live there or have a pass he will kick you off. I have a buddy who lives in one of the apartments. They had a big problem last year with not being able to fish there. The apartment complex was like 5 years behind on their lake association dues. I don't know if it has gotten resolved or not, I'm in Iraq now, and haven't talked to him in a few months.

I have caught more crappie out of those lakes than anywhere I've ever fished. I didn't eat them though. As for needing a pass, no one ever bothered me in the 3 years I lived there but I can't say for sure. As long as you have a fishing license you can always say you left your pass at home :D

That's it! I will be hitting that lake in the next couple of weeks with some minnows.;) Eating them? I'll have to think about that one, I guess they should be ok. They might taste a little like gasoline, oil, and piss but I'll just add some more salt and pepper.

REALLY??? Wow. Usually the fish are just 2-3 feet from the bank. Also, the area by the mill itself hols alot of fish. What were you using? Was the water very high?

Art

The baits that I always killed them on in elkhorn were the 1 or 2 inch Rapala crawdad or grasshopper. I would generally remove the middle hook because it tends to snag on the back hook.. I also had good luck with a real looking 3 or 4 inch nightcrawler that you get at Wal-Mart.

I can't really imagine catching a whole lot of fish in Elkhorn from the bank, you need to wade IMO.

nitrox28
03-20-2007, 09:43 AM
Honestly you can KILL them from the bank at the dam in front of the mill. If you wade downstream far enough from that point, disregard the alligator warning sign nailed to a tree :D Has anyone waded upstream from the dam? It looks like the water gets alot deeper up there.

There is a lake by Kirklevington apts (may be called Greenhouse now) off Tates Creek rd. It is just past New Circle. There are some monster bass in there as I caught several 4-5 pounders. It may be illegal to fish it now....I fished it 18 years ago.
