I recently bought a .45 auto pistol. I am planning to get my conceal weapon permit in the near future. But my question is that untill I do acquire my permit, is it unlawful for me to keep my pistol in my glove box department of my vehicle, and if so, what are my options so that Im not breaking any laws. Thank you.

The way I understand it, you can keep it in the glove box. NOT the center console compartment. Just keep it in mind if you get pulled over, and tell the officer before you go grabbing your proof of insurance....

Glove compartment, plain view or otherwise somewhere that is pretty much impossible to reach while seated.

Anything else could be considered concealed.

It needs to be in the glove box or plain view period. Even under the backseat could be considered concealed. Like WKYBanded said, center console is not a legal option either.

The zippered case that holds the owners manual in my F150 makes a very nice gun case. It has Ford written on it so that if someone were to be rummaging through my glove compartemnt, on first glance, it just looks like the owners manual.

You can read through KRS 527.020 (8), http://www.lrc.ky.gov/KRS/527-00/020.PDF. There is a bill up for vote now in the state that will allow you to keep the gun in the console not just the glove box w/o a permit.

and if you're in the middle of a carjacking you can tell the perps that you need to look in the manual to figure out how to open the door. :D

In all honesty, I thought there was wording that so long as it wasn't accessable it wasn't considered concealed. Been a long time since CCW class. I would recommend the class to everyone. Then you never have to worry about it again. ;)

+1 on that. After years of putting it off I finally did it last December. The most memorable thing of the class was discovering how many people are pretty lousy shots at a big target seven yards away.

Although there is a link already posted to one of the online KRS titles (http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/KRS/TITLES.HTM). I would recommend reading thoroughly chapter 237: Firearms and Destructive Devices (http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/KRS/237-00/CHAPTER.HTM).

IIRC, there was a bill to expand the "glove compartment" definition to include a center console but I don't know the status.

That bill is SB 8 (BR 239) and it's summary and status are as follows....

Current Status:

to Judiciary (S)
In Senate

Summary:

Amend KRS 527.020, relating to carrying concealed deadly weapons, to permit carrying a concealed deadly weapon in a motor vehicle in any compartment or box regularly installed in the vehicle by its manufacturer, regardless of whether the compartment or box is locked, unlocked, or has no locking mechanism.

It's "interesting" the bill that was to make sure to exclude the "secret compartments" to "help" this bill get passes has been WITHDRAWN...

SB 129(BR-356)
Title:
Sponsor(s):
Stivers II , Robert

Current Status:
WITHDRAWN
In Senate

I posted both bills together in the IIRC General Hunting forums...fwiw

I remember the same thing in my class.

This is mostly a question out of curiosity since I don't have that vehicle anymore so it won't apply to me now, but when I had a Jeep Wrangler, the center console was lockable and used the ignition key to do it. I wonder how that would be looked at if you carried a gun in there with it locked? To unlock it, you either had to carry a spare key, or turn off the ignition.

To be honest it would likely depend on the officer, some would be fine with that, others could charge you for it.......though I'd guess since it would take so much to get "at it" one could possibly beat it in court, would be better (and less expensive) to not have to......

The VERY best thing IMO is for us ALL to work on passing SB 8; and then it won't matter, and so many newer vehicles have such tiny glove boxes it NEEDS to pass......

Call 'em all, call 'em often!

PLEASE, just.......

Ask that your SUPPORT be given on SB 8 AND it be given to all of them!

It only takes a couple minutes to do a good thing.....

From what I've gathered, your console seems to be one of the most "frowned upon" places to keep it. It certainly wouldn't be legal if not locked, and I really doubt most LEOs would be "ok" with it there whether locked or not, but I could easily be wrong. They don't know if you have a spare key or not, or even if the lock works correctly. The glove box is legal by KY State Law, why not let it ride there when in the car.. if you want to lock it in the console when leaving the vehicle, that should be fine.

Or get your CCW and don't sweat it. It's much easier that way.

From what I remember from my CCW class was that it didn't matter if the console locks or not, it is considered concealed unless it is in the "glovebox" or in plain sight.I have been pulled over twice while carrying, and both times I told them first off that I was carrying, and they were really cool about it.
