How many of you boys use a 45/70 or Marlin 450 for hunting?
I do and I love it. It is my favorite.

put me in there 1895g, 1895g ltd, 1895 cb......aint nuthen puts things down like the 45-70 ..;)
i just got the ltd.it hasnt seen any action yet, dont know if i will ever put a shell through it, might have to leave that for the grandkids to decide what to do with...
i have what you call leverities, i have put the autos, and bolt guns away and have grown to love the levergun.....or my single shot encore in 300 win. for the longer jobs but its collecting more and more dust these days..
Theres just something about launching 300 to 450gr of lead, that starts out with a frontal area already the size of a lot of the other cals after their expanded!! Just don't seem fair to the critters!!:D :D
Sounds like you got a great collection of big bores started. I've got a 1972 model 1895 45/70 and a CZ458 Lott for my big bores. My brother has a 1895M 450 that my son and I took a 500lb black with in Upstate NY. My son has a 1895G. We love them big bores.:D If your into Marlins you should check out www.marlinowners.com (http://www.marlinowners.com) all them boys have Marlinitis:)

I let someone talk me out of my NEF 45-70 and have regretted it ever since. there is something about the single shot with the big bore that makes me want another.
Oh you just reminded me. I also have a NEF in 500SW. I'll only use that when I want ta see daylight through em.:D Well ya might as well go out an get ya another one. You wont rest once you've had one before!! Big Bore, Big Bullets, Big Holes, Its a good thing.

I've been know to pack a Winchester Hi-Wall (Italian repro) to the deer woods and have had great success with it. That 405 grains of lead doesn't stop too easily :D

I've got an 1895G and I love it. I've killed several deer with mine. I reload my own with Sierra 300gr. JHP's and a H4198. Does an awsome job on deer!
I really like the compactness of the Marlin lever guns and in a treestand they are great!
Heres a Pic of the bear that we got with a Marlin 450 loaded with a 300gr Barnes X. Thats my boy in the pic.

I don't (yet,) but my Dad and my brother both use .450 Marlins. Pop uses his H&R Ultra Hunter and my brother uses a Marlin Guide Gun. They'll sure roll anything less than a behemoth.

I sometimes use my .458 X 2" AMERICAN built on a an old Remington M-722 Action. This cartridge is almost identical to the .450 Marlin except the Marlin round has a larger belt.
That 722 is a sweet old gun. I always thought the 485 X 2 was a great Idea.
I hit that 500lb bear at nine yards in the shoulder, passed through, and took out the far shoulder. The wound channel was unbelievable!:D

I have a friend that shoots in 1000 yard black powder competitions with a 45-70. He took a trip to Africa for the world's championship back in the 90's and decided to hunt while he was there. He just used his target rifle with black powder, and successfully took several plains game species with it. One was a shot on a big wildabeast from one front shoulder to the opposite ham and just under the skin from over 100 yards.
It is a VERY capable and accurate cartridge for it's age.
Interesting. I read a story awlile back about a guy who took a Marlin 45/70 to Africa. He had a Cape Buff all lined up, and the guide told him to shoot. Neither him or the guide saw another Buff behind his. The shot went through both animals killing two with one shot!!! I guess having a double rifle worth thousands of dollars in some exotic cal. is nice, but it's also nice to know a good old boy can pack up his $400 Marlin or $200 NEF and still get the job done.:D

A friend of mine had a Sharps 45/70 double set trigger rifle that I shot several times. What a gun! I've gotta get me one of those!

The Remington M-722 is a great old gun! Action is smooth as butter. When I used this rifle, for the six Deer I shot; I use a "Light" load of: 42.0 Grs./IMR-4198/ 300 grain Hornady H.P. bullet. Velocity is around 1,900 FPS and it drops Deer right in their tracks! Recoil with this load is mild too, but if you use a 400 grain or even a 350 grainer bullet with full loads the recoil is a bit rough on the shoulder, especially if you don't have a recoil pad, like my rifle!

Are you trying to say, with full house loads it kills at one end, and damages at the other? :)

YEP!! When I had this rifle built, back in 1976, I had Fajen restock it. My mistake was I didn't have them to put in recoil bolt behind the recoil lug, and glass bed the rifle. After I fired several shots using heavy 400 grain loads, the stock developed a crack, and accuracy was falling off. I just replaced the new stock with the old one but glass-bedded the stock full length. Shot fine ever since! BUT IT KICKS LIKE A MULE!:D
I've been told the stock on a big bore, if shot alot, is considered a wear item. I guess the shoulder is to.:D
