I went on a turkey/crappie trip late season and ended up crappie fishing all day. Heard some gobble just never could get close enough to locate them before they quit. I'm going to try it a little earlier in season this year. I see turkeys every time I go over there to deer or rabbit hunt.

Fair warning...Pike's Ridge is almost dangerous, it gets so much pressure. I live about ten minutes from the lake and we have, in the past used boats to come into various areas from the water, instead of the parking areas. Sometimes we have success, but often times a guy will get set up on a bird and if he's coming in hot, you better keep your eyes and ears open, cause someone else on a boat will come in and try to get that hot gobblin' turkey. I was hunting just off the lake during the fall season and we just had taken a bird, when a guy came walking up to us, from the direction I shot, and asked if we did any good. We told him yes and asked if he was one of the guys that had came in on a boat a little while earlier (we witnessed them pull into a cove and come right in between us, some birds, and the lake...talk about dangerous.). He said that he wasn't on the boat, but he was with that group and he and another guy were...listen to this..."Driving the turkeys to their partners.". Not only had I never heard of driving turkeys, but seriously, how dangerous is that??? Trying to push a bird to a guy who has his gun pointed in your direction anyway. I mean, it's not like driving deer where your scent generally pushes the deer past the shooter before you come into the picture. We just picked up and left after that comment and what do you know, as we were walking back to the land we gained access from, here comes another guy...trying to drive the birds.

Now, to answer your question. There is some good turkey hunting on/around the lake, but they generally quit gobbling early and there's always somebody on a boat checking all the coves.

I've hunted there a lot over the years, and I have to say there are a ton of birds there. The only problem is that there are also a ton of hunters!! Most of the huntable land is very easy to access by road so you have a lot of road hunters. Pikes Ridge has areas that is more remote, but a lot of guys access it by boat. My suggestion would be to wait and hunt there towards the end of the season and then do it in the middle of the week. I've done that and was able to still have some very successful hunts without having to deal with a lot of hunters.

YES!!! I personally think that they overcrowd the place during youth season. Pike's Ridge, being probably the largest section of government land, is way overcrowded. By all means, put your kids in for the draw (I think they still do the draw), but just be very careful and safe.
