I'd go with a gas operated auto 20 gauge like a Remington or a Beretta. Less recoil when patterning = more fun to shoot for young kids.

I bought my daughter a Mossberg Bantam and it's a great shooter. It has an adjustable stock for small frame kids or kids with short arms. I think it costed about $200.

I bought my son a Rem, 1100 20 ga. last year. I bought an auto for the reduced recoil. It will also be great for doves, waterfowl ect. in the future.

I also discovered a low power scope was a great addition to this gun for turkeys.

I would get em an youth model 870 in a 20ga that shoots 3" magnums. You can't go wrong with this gun as far as price and ease of shooting.

I'm gonna guess around $400 for the Remington. I lucked out and found a Beretta 390 youth 20 gauge at Walmart on a close out deal for a little over $300. I've never seen one before or sense. The 12 gauges are at Walmart for $529 and they shoot and function great too. There have to be some good used youth 1100's out there though.

I was just looking at some articles in the July/August 2006 issue of "Turkey Call" magazine, getting fired up for the season, when I ran across an article about youth guns and remembered someone on the forum had posted a question about them.

The top guns they list for youth are (in no particular order):
-Remington 870 Express Jr.
-Charles Daly Youth Field Hunter VR-MC
-Benelli Nova Youth
-Mossberg Super Bantam Turkey
-New England Firearms Pardner Youth Turkey

I would go with the 870 for the price, durability, camo stock and forearm, and resale popularity.
