I've been thinking about buying one as well before they're put back on the "evil" list.

Don't know that I'll ever shoot it that much but now I want to buy one "just because I can".

I've had 2 and really have been getting the Black Rifle Disease here lately for another. IMO, everyone really needs two AR's.:D If you want it for long range target shooting, get one of the longer A2's. If you just want it for messing around at the range and home defense, I like the decked out shorter M4 types. Be careful when buying used. There are some Frankenguns out there that are made with different manufacturer's parts. Check out ar15.com for all the info and more. I'm a Bushmaster fan myself. This is the one I want to get now.

Bushmaster O.R.C. (Optics Ready CarbineŠ)
A CARBINE DESIGNED WITH THE OPTICS USER IN MIND

This top quality Bushmaster Carbine was developed for the shooter who intends to immediately add optics (scope, red dot or holographic sight) to the rifle - as it is shipped without iron sights. Various add-on rear iron sights can be easily attached to the flat-top Upper Receiver, and Bushmaster’s BMAS Front Flip-up Sight for V Match Rifles (Part # YHM-9360K) can be mounted over the Milled Gas Block. The premium 16” M4 Profile Barrel is chrome lined in both Bore and Chamber to provide Bushmaster accuracy, durability and maintenance ease.

quit posting all those dang pictures....you are making me want to drive all the way back to owensboro and get one now!:D Thanks for clarifying the difference in barrels...I can't make up my mind on that part. I've heard bushmaster are really great guns. I would like the m4 style for yotes and other critters, but then again mostly I'll be playing. I'm with you guys...I want one before the evil monkeys who make thing be put their evil "list" back into effect. How much you think one of those pretty things with iron sights and m4 style barrel will run me. I'm gettin one this weekend while im back home, plus my buddies want to go shooting on Saturday and they would drop jaws when I pulled that bad boy out:cool:

Got a few, built a few, and will be building a few more.

Rock River Arms put out some GREAT products. It's good enough for the FBI & DEA.

If you have any specific questions, let me know. I've learned alot from sifting thru PAGES and PAGES at ar15.com

Some of the "Frankenguns" you should steer clear of, some are better than anything built by the big Mfg's.

What kind of price tag do these normally run for a fairly stock unit?

I was thinking the last time that I looked at a few (several years ago) that they ran anywhere from $900-$1200.

That's not far off for a good one from RRA or Bushmaster etc. You could do it cheaper or certainly for more. If any of you guys want info on AR's, let me know. I'll try to help best I can. I have 3 colts. A match target comp Hbar, M4 and A2. Love all 3, Match target is a little longer, than the other 2. M4 and A2 both have collapsable stocks. have a thing for the ones with ponies on them, but Bushmasters seem to always work. Rock river is pretty good too. Check out gunbroker.com, there are a ton of them on there.

Although this is somewhat outdated, it's decent info:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=2&t=163620

the biggest thing to avoid:
cast receivers

all the stuff in the Hesse column from the above link are pretty undesireable, in most situations.

Chrome lined barrels will last a LOOOONG time but you give up a tiny bit of accuracy
Wilson makes MANY of the production barrels. MAny of the receivers are forged in the same location and milled/drilled at the "mfg's" site. These are where the tolerances come into play
Anodizing: GOOD Spray paint: NOT SO GOOD
Warranty: GOOD although many of the guns that are built aren't covered by warranty. These things are the chevy small block of the gun world. There are many parts and variables out there. LOTS of cool stuff and LOTS of junk.

I have a DPMS AP-4. It is a shorter barrel with a removable handle. and it still has the front sight. I am thinking about putting a longer barrel on it, but have no real reason. It shoots about a 2-3 inch group with the cheap ammo and much tighter with the better stuff. I bought it at Whitakkers for about $799 a year or so ago.

I have taken the handle off and put a scope on it for varmints. Even though the front sight would appear to be in the way of a scope, it does not impair the views at all. THey make taller scope mounts, but I wanted a good check rest. I went with a fixed stock. The collapsable ones just did not fit me well. I may buy another though, I can shorten the stock and, along with my supervision, my nephew will enjoy plinking with it.

I like teh gun and would buy abnother in a heart beat. They get real expensive real fast. There are more accessories than you could imagine.

I have built a few and I can tell you they are simple and easy to assemble. The accuracy of the gun depends on the quality of the components......I like RRA recievers and Wilson makes some great top ends....The trigger assembly and stock are pretty much standard and the only real pre assembly work is in polishing a few of the trigger assebly components.....Its not necessary but with the "blacK" coating on the hammer and sheer you get a gritty feel in the action that I cannot stand.......I would recommend that you spend a few extra dollars and get a good competition trigger assembly if you want to make a good long range weapon.....Do Not use cheap russian ammo that has the lacquer coating on it without cleaning the gun after use....The lacquer coating will melting into the bolt assembly and barrel and cause problems....severe cases have been documented and in my opinion the ammo isnt that accurate anyway......

Absolutely. The cheap-cheap stuff gums up and makes you think it's your gun's fault.

You guys should really consider building one. You get to know them inside and out AND you could save some cash. It probably sounds a little intimidating but it's fairly straight forward and you need virtually no special tools to do it.

just my 2 cents.

Help me with something. As I said above, I recently purchased a DPMS AP -4. I am thinking about changing the for arm grip to a machined tube. How is this done? Is there a good manual to pick up. ALso, can you remove teh front sight? It looks like it has two pins, but since it is directly attached to the barrel, I do not wnat to mess with it too much.

I'm not sure what the DPMS AP-4 has for a fore end. In most cases, if you do not want a free floating fore end, it's fairly simple to add a new fore end. Front sight removal will be necessary IF you do a free floating fore end and some non-free floating. If you have your heart set on a "tube" you will need to remove the front sight. A couple of pin and the gas tube will be removed as well. If, however, you want a rail type forend for attaching lights, sights, etc, you can do it w/out removing front sight. I have a Surefire fore end. http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/carfnbr/312/sesent/00

I used to be a black gun dealer,it is a world unto itself. If you are looking at Colt there are so many variations that price is difficult to guesstimate.
Green label, blue label,SP1 ,Match Target etc.. Colts are always at the top end price wise with Bushmaster close behind,in my personal dealings they are also the top two in quality. Be careful when building and use quality parts as there a a ton of knockoffs that are just cheap junk. If you really want to go all out put you an ACOG TA01NSN on top of a flattop receiver and let it rock!!
I sold my business after the 1999 Y2K rush and the Bush election, with the Dems gaining power I may have to get back in!!!! Probalbly met some of you Black gun dudes in times past, some of the greatest people I have known were AR guys and they truly are great guns!!

Best stuff I found was the Black Hill's fmj 55gr about $15 for 50 rounds.
Military reloadable brass and the accuracy was great. Black Hill's make other 223, more expensive, but the regular 55 fmj is the cheapest and shot better than the other for me. If you can't find it, ask the gun shop to order some. You won't be sorry, it's good stuff. I think Cabelas has it to.

This gun isn't their .50 cal.

It's an M16 variant that fires a 6.8mm shell. They were shooting through car doors and knocking down steel targets with it.

WhiteRubi
03-06-2007, 10:48 AM
Fair warning!!!

The 6.8 SPC has all but been trashed. Remington and Hornady were making ammo, Remington has/is stopping. Not enough commercial interest. It's really too bad. The 6.8 was exactly what the military needed and is a great all around round. It's balistically similar to a .308 with the size (nearly) of a .223

On another note...

this is my AR, well, one of them Basically exactly what killinmammals is building

i have the rra's m4 in there varmiter short barrel. I have a nikion buckmasters 4.5-14 scope on it and i have only had it for about a month it will out shoot anything i have in my safe. i would put it up against my rem 700 bdl in 223 as well. these guns are great. but be advised when you get one it wont be long before you want another. i had not even left the store and i was looking at my next one. have fun building or buying. and I would have to put a good word for the rra's line.
