The best(only) way I know to purr on a diaphram call is to hold it in your teeth while you stroke your slate call!!!!

I always have a slate handy for purring, but I can make a decent purr by fluttering my lips while making a whine. Just try to get the pitch and tone of the purr (I call it the whine) then add the lip flutter for the purr sound.

It was pretty difficult for me to learn, and I have found it is much easier for me to purr on a three reed v-cut than my two reed raspy old hen.

Hope this helps!

what I try to do is make a growling type sound deep in my throat. It's kind of like rolling your "r's" in spanish class

After listening to a ton of turkey videos and going to a bunch of seminars I finally got it down. My buddy could always purr on his diaphram pretty good, but he never could figure out a way to describe it to me. Well, after listening to him and watching his mouth and throat I figured it out.

It's exactly like bowhunter05 said make a growling in your throat. More specifically, make the sound you make when you see a hot lady -- the tiger growl. Perhaps, a better description is the growl Roy Orbison used in the old "Pretty Woman" song.

That's the best and only way I can describe it to someone. Good luck.

If you can think back to the sound you use to make with your mouth that simulated a machine gun....Try that but tone it down a bit and see how that works......You can vary the tone with your mouth and pitch with the amount of tongue pressure and volume of air you push over the diaphram...

It's not that hard. Just pucker your lips (do not flutter your lips) and roll your r's (liked stated before). You will catch on pretty quickly. It only took about 15 minutes to get skin_dog to purrin.

I can purr 2 different ways, both work, one just looks silly. Basically gargle with out making a sound and ease the air over the reads. That to me is the best sounding and least ridiculous looking way. The other way is to flutter your lips as you slip air over the reed. You look like a 6 month old but it works. Some people can't do it the other way.

I let my tounge do the fluttering against the call while softly letting out air. If you can do the "ruffles have ridges" thing you can purr

Ya' know, a topic like this would be banned in most countries -- and some states!:eek::eek:

I roll my tongue. like the machinegun sound. From my experience you need the call to be further back in your mouth than most people do when just makeing yelps. I can also do it with my lips but prefer the other method. I use a diaphram 95% of the time while hunting.

Roll the R's with a dry spit.

I had to check and make sure I was on KHF. All this talk about throats, tongue fluttering, and "puttin it farther back in your mouth. :D

It do sound a bit nasty!

However, I will agree with who ever said to try to gargle to make the sound while letting your tongue roll. Man this stuff just don't sound proper do it? Since I often hit sour notes while doing it during the actual conversation with a big Tom, I usually like to do my purring on a push/pull call. Most time though, I use purring as a blind call to simulate turkey feeding so as to cause curiosity to other turkey. I am one of those loud agressive turkey callers and prefer to use cutting, popping and loud yelps. Some guys like the soft suttle stuff. My take is that if a hen is hot and really wants attention she's gonna do what she can to get it and being tight mouthed aint what she'd do. But that's my style and what has been most successful for me.

Never could do the "roll the r's" thing so I purr by fluttering my lips and having the right pressure on the call. May not be perfect but the turkeys don't seem to mind!
